4.0 out of 5 stars Great Murse, March 24, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Maxpedition Malaga Gearslinger (Eyewear)
I've had the smaller Lunada for more than a year now and use it regularly as a "murse" while traveling. The Lunada has been comfortable and durable but is a little too small now that my wife has been adding things to what had been a perfect minimalist day pack. Given the need for a bigger size, the Malaga fit the bill perfectly.

It has lots of compartments perfect for keeping things organized and easy to access. The quality of materials and zippers are top notch. The workmanship is a tiny bit less perfect than my Lunada (from my perfectionist perspective). I'm also thinking that the Malaga will be the perfect size once I add a netbook to my traveling bag.

The only complaint that I can find is that the bag is not very water resistant with the many easy to use zippers. My solution has been to carry a water resistant stuff sack in case of rain (haven't had to use it yet though).

In the end, this is another typical Maxpedition product which leaves little room for improvement. Highly recommended if you think this product will meet your needs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just right., January 18, 2011

I've had this pack for a couple of months and this pack is perfect for school or a small hike. I was able to fit my 13in mac book, three 1,1/2 inch text books and still have room for the computer charger, snacks.pens and glasses.

For CCW it is a tight fit once you load up on gear however its still accessible with a little man handling. The nice thing about the D ring is if you give it a good pull the weapon will even more accessible. This pack is rugged and tough and can take a beating.

I have had it roll onto rocks and a small stream and the 1000-Denier ballistic nylon still looks good. The water resistance will withhold against light showers but if its pouring it will only resist it till its soaked. I had it rain hard and my Malaga was soaked and I must say my polar fleece inside was still dry!

Love Maxpedition products, this bag rocks!!

The Malaga is another well designed excellent quality bag from Maxpedition.
Perfect for an EDC bag that includes a netbook. I had the Maxpedition Lunada Gearslinger but It was a little too small. This one is just right and has a compartment for the netbook.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well made small non-backpack backpack, December 9, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Maxpedition Malaga Gearslinger (Eyewear)
Problem: I needed a small day pack / shoulder bag / utility bag to keep by me in my car even when the passenger seat is occupied.

Given the rather small available space my choices were limited. I though the optimal shape would be a vertical messenger bag.

Next, I wanted a well constructed bag. I have tired of the nice looking bags made from 1680 denier ballistic nylon. Time and time again I have found that bags made from this material fray and look shabby when used regularly in a very short time -- sometimes less than a year. Often bags made from 1680 aren't cheap either. The bags are not that easy to repair. Neither the local tailors not the local shoemakers would sew a seam that opened on a nice looking bag with plenty of compartments and pockets I bought. This limited the field immediately.

Also importantly is good ergonomics. I have found that shoulder bags are not good for my back after a certain amount of weight when carried after several blocks. Backpack tend to be too big but well made backpacks distribute weight much better.

I have other bags made by Maxpedition so I looked to that company for available options.

In my limited experience and from what I can tell, Maxpedition's bags are made from Teflon coated 1000-Denier water and abrasion resistant light-weight ballistic nylon, YKK zippers, the stitching and construction has been well above average.

The options I considered were the Neat Freak Organizer, Remora, Colossus, Mongo, the Malaga, the Noatak and the Sitka.

The Neat Freak, Remora, and the Colossus were too small. The Mongo was the wrong shape and is a shoulder bag.. Of the remaining three the Malaga had the best footprint and capacity. Its footprint is 9.5 in. x 4 in. with a front pocket that, when filled, brings it to 9.5 in. x 5 in. Its height is 13 in.

It's ergonomic are very good. It is a "gearslinger" meaning that it only has one strap. But it is designed in such a way to be worn across the body so that it rides and distributes its content weight like a back pack would.

It has 4 compartments and the front upper and lower and the main compartment have pockets. The rear compartment has two intended purposes - conceal weapons carry, or a 50 oz. hydration pouch; I occasionally used it as an additional pocket because I do not want to increase its depth.

I have had the Malaga for a few weeks now and am happy with it and recommend it highly. However, it is a little too deep for it's intended purpose, but it'll do until something better comes along.

This bag is surprisingly large for it's actual size. I wanted something to keep in the truck to hold a few items that would give me time to get to my rifles. I didn't give it five stars because I think it could have been made more cc friendly. But with a little modification it will do the job quite well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Sling Choice, October 27, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
My 2nd Max pack. First was a Jumbo, but it wasn't jumbo enough. I use the packs for a different reason than most might: as a camera bag. I recently had surgery and need to get out and walk and found pretty early on I needed a bag to carry my camera, lenses and water. None of the 3000 camera bags (ok, so more like 9) that I have have a slot for water and none had the extra pockets for other little stuff. Plus, I don't have a sling camera bag. The Jumbo, then the Malanga seemed perfect for the task.
OK, a couple things: almost no padding. For a camera bag, not a good thing. I wrap mine in some velco-enhanced fleece padding and we're all good. Also they have plastic and metal pieces on the inside of the pockets which could scratch your camera. Something to think about if you're going to use it like me.
So why did I use for cameras? Most camera bags have tons of padding. Great for cameras and lenses - not great to haul around everywhere. Maybe if I was hiking on rocks, I'd take a Lowepro sling instead, but I'm walking flat trails in parks. A little care and user-installed padding and that's all I need. Also, since camera bags are for sensitive gear and contain so much padding, water is a strict no-go. I needed water for the walks. Between my dslr and water, I'd take water first. In the Malaga, water is provided for in the outside pouch closest to the wearer and separated from the gear by a waterproof layer. Fine for me.
I fit in this thing my Nikon D7000, 24-120/4 lens, Sigma 10-20 lens in a lens case, batteries and memory cards, SB800 flash, filter sachel, plus knives, power bars, first aid stuff and a multi-tool. Try that in your Lowepro sling!
The Jumbo actually was more comfortable on, but the Malaga can be switched from shoulder to shoulder, where the Jumbo is side-specific dependent on the model you select. The Jumbo also couldn't safely take camera and lens, plus extra lens. And it had no Camelbak pouch.
At a hundred bucks or so, it's also way cheaper than a camera bag. And when you leave the camera at home, perfect overnighter. But then, if I was going overnight, I'd take my camera.

5.0 out of 5 stars Heavy Duty, But..., September 19, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
It draws massive attention. Everyone is like "dude are you like special ops!" lol... na, na, ya see.... i like the heavy duty but my only dislike is the large front pocket is hard to open and close. The sharp corners the zipper has to navigate don't flex well due to the super fat material. I keep a full size Glock in it with a spare mag... Topo maps, first aid... flashlight etc. basic wtf SHTF stuff... if in doubt just swing it and it will blugeon very well... SUPER TOUGH. you can't wear this thing out unless you hit it with fire...

5.0 out of 5 stars Maxpedition Malaga, Rocks!, September 1, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Maxpedition Malaga Gearslinger (Eyewear)
I love these packs so much much that I have gotten one for my wife & one for myself. They are extremely rugged, compact, & customizable/diverse. These bags can be used for toting gear of all sorts & have MOLLE webbing all over . This gear slinger has multiple carry configurations & can be accessed easier than a regular backpack. I love the cross-breasted strap because it can be swung easily from the back under the arm for quick access on the move. Other great features are the compression straps, the ability to make it lefty-friendly or righty-friendly. If you are the active or tactical sort, this bag can be lashed to your body with an extra stowable strap & compressed in a manner that you won't even know its on you. Full sprints, jogging, rolling on the ground, & this pack won't budge. This bag can hold a lot of gear, too! It makes for a great Range Bag, Day Hiker, Bug Out Bag, Tool Bag, Every Day Carry,Man Purse, Diaper Bag, Hunter/Fisher pack & more.
