This is the only versipack in the maxpedition line that is fully padded. It holds my Canon EOS 5D Mark II and a small lens comfortably in the main compartment. I do use a divider than I had left over from another camera bag to separate the camera from the lens. When I am not carrying my camera I am also able to carry my Apple iPad in the pocket on the inside of the main compartment.

I am still able to utilize the CCW compartment with both the ipad or the camera and I still have enough room to carry small items in the front pocket. I really like the way the top flips away from your body. It makes it very easy to change lenses and not have to worry about the top getting in the way.

Wow - that descibes the Maxpedition Colossus. Is there anything Maxpedition didn't think of?

I needed a sling-type bag to use as a DSLR camera case for carrying a Nikon D-90, three additional lenses and assorted stuff. I looked at other brands built specifically for carrying camera equipment and after studying the pros and cons and sizes of each, I kept coming back to the Colossus. And, I am glad I did. I was a little afraid that because of the name "Colossus" it was going to be huge but it isn't - it is a great size.

First - I needed to carry the D-90 with a 105mm f/2.8 Sigma lens attached. So, with the Colossus, I could carry it vertically in the main pouch like it was in a holster. I added some foam that I had left from re-configuring a Pelican case and used it to hold the camera securely. I like the fact that the top of the main pouch lifts away from your body when unzipped. That way I can carry a couple of filters in the pocket under the top and I am not fumbling with a top that is against my body where I can't see the contents.
Second - I like that the Colossus is ambidextrous and I can carry it on either side. The nylon shoulder sling slides very smoothly inside of the removable shoulder pad making it quite easy to bring to the front to grab stuff and then back to my side.
Third - the buckle snaps that hold and adjust the shoulder strap are enclosed under elastic webbing making it a bit harder to disconnect and reattach the snaps - but that's a good thing. That means that carrying the bag in a crowded area, someone can't just bump into you and disconnect the strap very easily and grab the bag and take off. Smart design move by Maxpedition!

I use this for my EDC bag. It goes everywhere I do. It is built tough and will last. I also have a bottle holder and a FR1 first aid pouch on the sides. Just think when you are loading it up. It can get heavy fast with all the room. With this bag and it's contents I am ready for what ever the day throws at me.
One reason I picked this bag over other Versipacks was the fact that it is ambidextrous.

There are imitations... and then there's the real deal. There are cheaper versions of this pack - of almost every pack Maxpedition has. I should know - I own several. Some are junk, and some are very good. All of them are Much cheaper that their original Maxpedition equivalents. But none of them - None of them - approach the pure, tank like materials and construction of a real Maxpedition bag. When I NEED to know what I'm carrying has to make it there, safe, secure, and in one piece, I buy Max. End of discussion.

The Colossus is the largest of Maxpedition's "Versapack" line, but it is by no means oversized. There are three things you can always count on:

1) The generational quality of workmanship. This pack will not drop a stitch or mar significantly by 2050, even if used daily as a regular carry bag.

2) They are never as big as you envision them. You always, always look at it and think, "I really was hoping for something a little bigger..."

3) They always surprise at how much stuff you can fit inside. Max is master at cunning pockets and organization. You may have been hoping for something a little bigger, but you'll usually find yourself with surprising space to spare.

If you really, really need more space, Max has you covered as well.Molle webbing allows you to add a dizzying array of extra storage space, custom to any need, and secure it to the pack as securely as if it was originally sewn on. Change your mind? Then unloop one storage pouch and loop in a different one. As often as you want. If you have a Maxpedition bag, you have the basis for 50 Maxpedition bags that you can custom design for your personal needs.

The Colossus is of peculiar size.

I use this pack everyday. I push it into a locker at work, it carries my lunch, medicine, pistol, sunglasses and all the other little things I use everyday. It has worked flawlessly and for the price this is a great deal.

read a review on this saying a user had trouble using this bag for a 1911 CCW bag. In the odd times when I need to carry off body, I put a Springfield XDM 4.5" barrel in this bag WITH a full sized fixed blade in the same back zipper pocket and have no problem removing it quickly with one hand in a cross body draw. I did tie a longer piece of cord to the zipper so it's easy to grab and pull open with no mistaken pocket problems or tiny cord issues. Put a full hand of cord on there that is easily identified and you are good to go. The bag is stiff at first, but that is because it is quality made and needs to be broken in over time. There is no PERFECT off body CCW solution, but this is pretty darn good. It would be extremely difficult to remove this from your body or cut it off your shoulder without a serious struggle; a primary concern to me in off body carry. It's not gonna carry the kitchen sink, but its good for wallet, light, your licensed concealed carry piece, a snack and a few extras. I've been known to put diapers in it, use it as a range bag, etc. I would only CCW in the rear zipper pocket. The main compartment is not fast enough to open. But as per previous reviewer, I don't carry a bazooka or a 1911 so I can't speak to that. full size double stack 9mm with a big ole knife: no problem.

UPDATE: purchased in 2012, this bag looks brand new after about two days a week of ccw and baby bottle duty, with a hard use day here and there. Extremely durable!
