5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Pack I've Ever Encountered, May 11, 2010

Maxpedition FATBOY S-TYPE VERSIPACK is by far the best pack I have ever purchased, and quite frankly, I have indeed purchased amany. I am a chaplain officer with the International Federation for Emergency Chaplains. I have a need to carry first aid supplies, as well as my religious articles on me at all times, while I am on duty. This pack, which has a removable shoulder pad is both comfortable with or w/o it. (I myself removed the pad). The pack, in which I ordered in khaki color, serves quite a unique purpose. Of course, originally designed to serve search & rescue personnel, this versipack is small enough to fit snuggly to your side, and yet large enough on the inside to hold your most desired gear.

There were only two drawbacks that I found with this pack. First & foremost, the waist strap, (when not in use), has to be wrapped around the top handle for out-of-the-way use so that it doesn't hang down side of the pack. Now, I'm not certain about anybody else, I have a 32-sized waist, & I find that I can use this pack with or without the strap, unfortunately, without using it, and the pack has a tendency to slide forward when your walking or bicycling for instance. The second concern, which really isn't that big, was the front-most zippered pocket. I use this to stash my Rosary beads & holy water bottle, which is really the only two tiniest of articles you can actually put in there. This pocket is so small that it really shouldn't have probably even been a pocket & is most likely there just for looks.

Besides this, the two sides pockets provide ample storage for my first aid items, EMT shears, hemostat, latex gloves, multitool, even a mini-Mag flashlight holder. The main compartment that has a drawcord for secure closure holds most of my emergency supplies, notpad & pen, first aid gear, such as; bandages, tape, gauze, wraps, etc. I can accommodate my prayer book, stole, cruets and more in the front zippered compartments and the rear zippered pocket.

The pack is great too because I have the need to represent myself as an emergency chaplain, so the strap serve the great purpose of being wide enough to accommodate my chaplain badge. This truly is the "best pack I've ever used."

Two thumbs up to Maxpedition!

Joseph Freas, C.C.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very practical organizer for all my "must carry" items., June 19, 2010

After forgetting my wallet a few times, I bought this to be able to grab it and go, having all my "must haves" and not spend time searching for my wallet, keys, calculator, checkbook, glasses, pens/paper ect. Excellent workmanship in the stitching & material. It will hold my Glock .45/ or camera in the back compartment with ease. Overall not to big or to small, and has a nice GPS compartment and one for my flashlight.

CONS: 1. Make sure you can use the "S" version (left handers) although it will work either way over the shoulder it just makes a little easier to access if you are left handed and carrying on the left side, I'm right handed and carry it right, and adjust to it fine. I don't CCW so I don't "fast draw", as the zipper pull would be on the wrong side for quick access.
2. The shoulder strap does not fully remove (snaps together) if you only want to hand carry, but for me it's ok as I can snap it together on the shopping cart handle, a little more security. It's a little bulky to carry while shopping and does flop around a bit. 3. This model uses only ykk single zippers, so you have to fully unzip the front compartment from only one side, and no cell phone pocket.

Well built, lots of compartments, light and easy to carry. On my last Canada fishing trip several of my fishing partners teased me about having a "man purse". When we returned they wanted to know how & where they could order one and of course I replied "Amazon".

5.0 out of 5 stars Great bag, January 1, 2012
This review is from: Maxpedition Fatboy S-Type Versipack (Sports)
My friend has the jumbo version of this bag. It is perfect for her but I prefer a slightly smaller bag so I got this one. It is great. Construction seems very sturdy which is to be expected from Maxpedition. I wanted a bag that could rest on my hip as a compliment to my primary bag (more on that below) and I think with the shoulder pad off this will be perfect.

(I have a knockoff version of the Maxpedition Lunada that has been my primary EDC bag for a while now. It fits my laptop, a notebook, my meds, wallet, phone, etc. It has such a magical bag of holding quality to it that a few friends of mine bought them as well after seeing mine. I have compared mine to the real version and they are very similar but I think when mine eventually dies - I know it will someday since being a knockoff the construction isn't as solid - I will buy the real thing. I wasn't sold on spending what Maxpedition wanted until I had a fake version and loved it. They are worth the price for sure.)

I decided to spring for the real thing when I picked up this bag and I am glad I did. While not as roomy as my psuedo-Lunada, I can still carry quite a lot of stuff. The main compartment fits my Kindle, a notebook, a small camera and some other bits and pieces. The other pockets fit my meds, my multitool, wallet, phone. I know I can fit more stuff, I just don't have that much to carry every day. Ha ha.

I know eventually I am going to have need of carrying both bags at once and I think they will suit each other nicely. Zero buyers remorse on this since I have been carrying it every day to break it in and it felt natural and user-friendly immediately. It is also much cooler than a purse. I have never been much of a girly girl so this bag - being both utilitarian and attractive generally just by virtue of good design work - is my preference. I know women who spend hundreds on purses and walk away with something not as useful and not as bad ass looking. :D I really want the orange/foliage one as well for something more high-visibility (and also because I like orange) so I will probably buy another to carry when I don't feel like basic black.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Pack. Left side carry nice for right handed people, November 29, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Maxpedition Fatboy S-Type Versipack (Sports)
The Maxpediton quality we well known and continues with this pack. I won't bother with the stats however will say that maxpedition's web site has all the pocket sizes and material info.

I am right handed and purchased this ¨S¨ pack (left side carry) with a specific intention. After trying both right and left side carry with one of my wife's shoulder bags, I discovered that getting to a passport, camera, sun glasses and other travel items was easier when carried on the left side. So, before buying the right side carry, even if right handed, try using a shoulder bag you have laying around the house and see what works best for you.

Pockets - The small side flap pocket will hold a Nokia candybar style phone or the Motorola flip without any problem. It is wider than it appears. While cruising and getting off the ship for the day, this bag held a point and shoot camera, extra battery, sun glasses, RX medications, sun block, money, credit cards, ID, wallet and small first aid kit without any problems and room to spare.

Adding a pouch - We added a Maxpedition Anemone Compact Utility Pouch by attaching it to the buckle side of the pouch strap and it worked great. This pouch will easily hold a point and shoot camera, extra battery and extra memory card. This is great for vacations and the pouch can be easily removed for packing it away after your trip if you don't need it.

Storm collar - This bag comes with a storm collar in the main pocket. When I purchased the bag this was not a feature I thought was that big a deal UNTIL we got off the ship in Aruba and it started to rain. The collar saved everything from getting wet. With this in mind, I would not get one of the cheaper Maxpedition models without the storm collar.

If you need a bigger bag, there is always the JUMBO. We have a jumbo (which I still need to do a review on)and it is quite a bit bigger. Bigger to the point that it is almost to big when traveling in a taxi or tour bus. The jumbo is however GREAT for carrying a SLR camera and like this smaller model, it has the storm collar to protect your gear from the weather.

So, if you are needing a bag for a trip or cruise, I found this bag to be great for it's intended use. I honestly can't find any negatives to comment on, so this bag gets the big 5 star rating.

I am pleased in a general sense with this bag. It is the right size and weight for my needs.

I purchased the "S" model, which is meant for left side carry. I wish the key ring holder was on the opposite end of the strap. Where it is now, my keys are about as far from my hand as they can get. I've got to rotate the bag completely around me in order to reach the keys. I tend to reach for my keys more than any other thing in my bag.

My iPhone fits fine in the front-most pocket under the main flap. I simply open the main Fastex buckle and I've got my phone.

This is my second Maxpedition bag and when the need arises, I'll buy a third.

5.0 out of 5 stars As advertised..., March 1, 2011
I'm the telephone guy at a large junior college and needed something to carry the basics in when responding to a work order or incident. This bag fits the bill as I can fit a buttsett, signal injector, pickup amplifier, punchdown tool, wire stripper, scissors, flashlight, an RJ-11 & RJ-45 crimper, 2 pill bottles (one RJ-11 tips, one RJ-45 tips), plus a small zip bag filled with various odds and ends. The Fatboy is well made with quality stiching. I've always thought Maxpedition gear was a little pricey but it seems you get what you pay for.

4.0 out of 5 stars fantastic quality, but slight color variation from image, January 17, 2011
This review is from: Maxpedition Fatboy S-Type Versipack (Sports)
The other reviews for this item are spot-on in terms of quality and craftsmanship--the stitching is flawless, the materials are top-notch, and there are more useful pockets and hooks than I know what to do with! I bought this primarily as a DSLR bag, and can easily carry my Sony A33 with two lenses in the center pouch. Plenty of room in the other pockets for my charger, extra battery, cables and accessories--and have a lot of storage to spare. I wanted something that looked more utilitarian and/or military than your standard small camera bag (it's a little difficult to find a sling bag that looks "manly"), and this definitely fits the bill. It's purposeful without being obtrusive, and fits my body very well. The waist belt was pretty worthless to me, but fortunately it was very simple to remove it. The clips are still on the back but are not in the way; still, I will likely just cut them off.

The one and only reason I knocked off one star is because the color of some hardware pieces is different from the picture. The image that is shown for the khaki color shows black clips and zippers. The item I received is completely khaki: clips, zippers and all. I still think it looks great and I am keeping it anyway, but I would have preferred the black accents since that is what is advertised.

5.0 out of 5 stars Maxpedition Fatboy, December 7, 2010
I originally purchased the s-type but sent it back. I'm left handed and prefer a right side carry. It was also confusing reading the advertisement and I overlooked that the s-type did not have a cell phone pocket (my mistake).
