Editorial Reviews

Review

“In 'Max’s Castle,' by Kate Banks, the letters are simply letters, yet become ingenious tools for sparking a child’s imagination….As with previous collaborations between Banks and the bold illustrator Boris Kulikov ('Max’s Words', 'Max’s Dragon'), words become magical amulets that transmogrify the world around Max.” --The New York Times

“Kulikov’s chalky, boldly lit illustrations have a bright energy that feels almost improvisational, working in seamless harmony with Banks’s nimble wordplay.” --Publishers Weekly, Starred

“Brimming with clever wordplay, humor, and mixed-media scenes worthy of any child’s dreams-come-true, the full impact is clearly the result of seasoned collaboration and experience…” --School Library Journal

"Playful perspectives, vivid colors and animated action are brilliantly executed with details that require a second look, then a third.” --Kirkus Reviews, Starred

Generally when I read to my 4 year old son (who is obsessed with knights and swords, hence the reason for us choosing this book) my 7 year old daughter takes no interest whatsoever. With this book she's leaning over our shoulders animatedly pointing out the words as they change from Walls to Halls, Adder to Ladder etc with each building block. My son, who is just learning to read, is equally fascinated by it. I'm buying if for every Max and Ben I know - and all of their friends. I have bought hundreds of books for my children and this is the first time I have been moved to write a review. Suffice to say, I love this book!

Max's Castle is one wonderful book! I can't wait to read it with my grandchildren. Max's world is filled with simple blocks that bring to life all the wonder of Max's imagination - a thrill for his brothers. One letter change and the whole story changes! The author and illustrator have created a terrific story. I look forward to reading their other books. This one is SO much fun!

Max finds an old box of toys and blocks under his bed. He decides use his imagination and build a castle with them. His brothers join in and before long they have some amazing creations. This book might be a little above the heads of the typical picture book crowd. It could be used with older kids to teach anagrams and words within words.

Fantastic book! My son is starting to read, so he loves to see how you can rearrange letters to make different words. This is a great lead-in to the game Scrabble!
