5.0 out of 5 stars Max's Toys
Our son Max loves to help the bunny Max count his toys. The illustrations catch his attention, and he enjoys finding the different toys in the pile on the last page.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good Picture Book
Like all Max and Ruby books this is also very limited in dialogue or strong story line. We like to pick through the page depicting his toys and play "find the toy".

5.0 out of 5 stars wonderful on many levels, January 14, 2002

This review is from: Max's Toys (Board book)
My 13-month-old son has loved the pictures in this book since he was a tiny infant. He still loves the book. The story is very sweet, and it quite stands alone - unlike some other counting books, which have no "plot" aside from the numbers. I also appreciate that the boy-rabbit Max is shown to want a doll and that his sister (ultimately) thinks Max's trucks, soldiers, etc. are desirable toys.

I love to give this book as a new-baby gift. It is a delight!

4.0 out of 5 stars cute counting book with abrupt ending, May 1, 2003

Max wants Ruby's doll, Emily, but Ruby will not part with her. Max has a house with 2 chimneys, 3 soldiers, 4 bears, etc. but all he wants is Emily.

This is a cute counting book, especially for fans of this charming brother-sister bunny duo. But the ending is rather abrupt and always leaves my child wondering what happens next.

Because my []son does the same exact things. Sherbert in the tub, favorite shirts, worm cakes...he does it all. This book is a fantastic buy for your [] boy or girl.

I agree with the reviewer who noted her fourteen month old loves and understands this little series of books...I am old enough to remember when kids were not expected to really start picking up words, numbers, etc. at that age, but (sigh?), things change. The pictures are so adorable that the simple 'counting' plot is definitely going to stay with little readers, without overwhelming them. Cute, cute, cute!

My son, who is 3 yrs old, loves the "Max & Ruby" tv show. He doesn't ask for "Max's Toys" as much as the others. It's pretty cute (book is prob better for a younger child). His favorite books are:
"Dragon Shirt"
"Bunny Cakes"
"Bunny Party"
"Max Cleans Up"

4.0 out of 5 stars Loveable Max & Ruby swap toys, May 31, 2009
This review is from: Max's Toys (Max & Ruby) (Board book)
Bias alert: I love all things Rosemary Wells. Her winsome drawings never grow old. I've read this with my kids countless times and they're now old enough (3-1/2) to know the story by heart and "read" it to me! Max and Ruby have a typical sibling struggle over sharing toys, and resolve it to their mutual delight by the last page. All the while, the story teaches counting skills. Little ones will just enjoy the pictures. Three year olds can count the toys themselves and even comment on the conflict at hand. Fun book with cute illustrations.

Max's Toys is another wonderful little Max book for children and adults. They capture a young child's world with humor and empathy. As Max asserts his "needs," Ruby perceives them as "wants" much like parents. I am a child/family therapist and I use the Max and Ruby books frequently.

The first editions of the Max series (Very First Books - 1979/1984) are wonderful. Unfortunately, the following editions are not as whimsical. It's worth it to look for the older books.
