5.0 out of 5 stars Great Storage Solution, November 14, 2002
By
This review is from: Maxtor 60 GB 7200 RPM EIDE Hard Drive (Personal Computers)
I purchased my drive from one of the big office supply stores with rebates and coupons and got it for less than a doller per GB. Maxtor drives are easy to install and come with software to help get them partitioned and formatted. A detailed instruction manual for installation is included as well showing all jumper settings. I installed mine on a Win XP Home system and it was a snap. Only negative is that the drive is rather loud during use. Not bothersome loud but you do notice it compared to the original 20 GB drive that was in the system (also a Maxtor). Have used Maxtor in the past and never had a failure. Good Drive

4.0 out of 5 stars Humming along just fine, January 26, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Maxtor 60 GB 7200 RPM EIDE Hard Drive (Personal Computers)
In this age of 100 GB drives, why get a 60 GB? Well, since I am still using Win98 the max space accepted (or so I am told) is 128 GB, so it makes most sense to get two 60s and thereby split the potential loss of data if any one drive ever fails.

When I opened up my Dell PC to install this new drive, I discovered that my Dell came with an older Maxtor 20GB drive which has been running fine for about 4 years now. So this is my second Maxtor drive, though I didn't realize that when I made the purchase.

I've had this new Maxtor 60 GB drive for a few weeks now and I am entirely satisfied. Other brands touted how silent they were, but this Maxtor(which didn't tout it) is quiet too - just a humm (vibration) when it is getting data. It is more quiet than the older Maxtor from a few years ago, which rumbles a bit. So clearly they've improved the quietness of this drive.

It was simple to physically insall, though I must admit I cheated a bit and just stuck it inside using some velcro rather than bothering with the included brackets and screws (which are included so one can use either size bay).

In contrast to what others have written, I found the formatting of the drive (the initial setup) to be confusing. I muddled through and though I am not sure precisely what I did, two hours later the drive was up and running perfectly. I suppose that is an endorsement, but you still need to count three and pray that you know what you are doing, or can at least fake it.

I was particularly puzzled by the way that the manual shows several positions for some switches (whereby one chooses if this drive will be the main drive or a secondary drive), but the sticker affixed to the drive itself (which I assume is more up-to-date than the manual) has entirely different positions for the switches. So I had to try a couple variations before I hit the one which in fact worked.

Lastly, a general endorsement of getting a second hard drive: I use Photoshop often, and the files tend to be enormous. I'd been forced to burn off the files to CD-Rs to make room to continue working. What a waste of time and CD-Rs that had been! I am now so pleased to be using my second drive for all my rough drafts and works-in-progress, and then later on copying only the finished file to my primary drive. It feels so refreshing to have this level of neat-ness, where before there had been clutter.

I hadn't realized how simple it was to add a second hard drive. Try it, you'll like it.
