Must have!,
This review is from: Maxtor 300 GB USB 2.0 OneTouch III Series 16 MB Cache Hard Drive ( T01H300 ) (Personal Computers)
This item is one of those things that is built to last and performs flawlessly. I haven't had a single problem with this hard drive. The setup is easy and I haven't had one problem downloading to or uploading files to my computer while using it. It has no noise and looks great!

Very Convenient For PC Backup,

Pros:- Quick, easy installation (plug it in) - Backup software is easy to use Cons: - Initial back-up may take hours (but incremental backups afterward are quick enough) - Indicator light on Western Digital offerings are cooler looking (yes, pretty minor) Notes: This is the USB 2.0 version of the product. (There are also versions which include FireWire and Ethernet connections). I am using Windows XP (Home Version) I was so happy with this product, that I bought a second one, for off-site backup (I swap the two units every few months).

I just purchased this yesterday at Office Max, they had a great deal on this for $99. It was very easy to set up, did my first backup last night with no problems at all. It's very compact and I'm glad I got it.

Purchased two separate units, both of which have failed in exactly the same way as detailed in the CNET discussion forms. Works for a few months, and then one day *poof* your data is no longer accessible. It's not a coincidence - it's a crappy, flawed product which is eventually going to have a class actions suit filed (as evidenced by the Sklar lawfirm's website and numerous discussion boards).

Do not not buy this unit. I bought this Maxtor 300 GB at frys for $99. I could back up my files on this drive for the first time I used it with Windows XP. I never used it with in next two months. Now After 3 months I pluged it and is giving constant "delayed read/write" error. After geting this error, the drive is not accessible any more. Restarting PC, makes it work for about 5 minuts and goes back into "delayed read/write" error mode.I tried this unit plugging into Macbook. It also gets frozen after starting copying first large file. Tried high speed firewire connecting to Macbook, also goes into error mode after transferring first file. I have tried calling support from Maxtor, which now goes to Seagate. I got advice that try downloading new drivers. I got from web site same copy of software which came on CD with the HD. That makes no difference. Now 90 days are over after purchase, so I can not return it. This unit is a heavy paper weight with no use. If you are looking for quality product, stay away from this Maxtor 300 GB.

Disastrous Choice for Me,
This review is from: Maxtor 300 GB USB 2.0 OneTouch III Series 16 MB Cache Hard Drive ( T01H300 ) (Personal Computers)
I attempted to install one of these drives according to the user manual. When I connected the USB cable to my laptop, the computer experienced a hard crash, and, when I managed to get the computer to start back up, the USB ports were gone. The fix was replacement of the motherboard at a cost of $484. No help is so far available from Seagate on the cost of damages, a subject I have been pursuing with them through various means for three months. The most I have been able to accomplish has been to get back the purchase price of the drive from the vendor.

I'd love to know if anyone can use this with VISTA. I have not been able to find any drivers or assistance from either the manufacturer of this product or from Microsoft itself. It is very frustrating to have a new external drive, and not be able to use it. I'm sure if you have XP or another version it will work fine - but not with VISTA OS.

Died after 8 months - lost all my files,

This review is from: Maxtor 300 GB USB 2.0 OneTouch III Series 16 MB Cache Hard Drive ( T01H300 ) (Personal Computers)
My 320GB external OneTouch III maxtor drive failed. I have lost my life's work for trusting the namebrand Maxtor. Seagate bought them out. So far, Seagate can replace my drive but cannot recover my files free of charge. In fact, they charge $1,400 to do so. Therefore, I have had to resort to joining a possible class action lawsuit. Be forewarned - there are no guarantees for any hard drive on the market. If you must get this particular drive I highly recommend backing it up to DVD or another drive as often as possible, unless you intend to use the drive for temprary scratch files such as video editing, which it is capable of doing so with the extremely fast data transfer speeds, given its 16MB cache. I experienced 40 megs per second transfer rates at times. Overall, I do not recommend this particular hard drive due to reliablity issues.
