If they hadnt made it someone would have had to invent it, August 3, 2005
This review is from: Maxtor One Touch II 100 GB USB 2.0 External Hard Drive (E01E100) (Personal Computers)
I found this drive to be a perfect way to back up my hard disc, remove it to a safe place for security in case of a fire, theft, or our Florida Hurricanes, and at the same time take out to use again. It was very easy, I just copied the files I wanted and went in the kitchen to cook dinner while my Maxtor did all the work!
While 100GB may not be much for power users, I assume their bigger models work just as well. However, this drive can copy several different entire backups of my hard drive's data and data from two or three other computers as well.
I also found that this drive is totally plug and play. You simply plug it in, with Windows XP, you need no software to operate it. I was backing up my hard drive five minutes after I took it out of the box! I find it also perfect to take to other sites to download data on other computers.
I am confronted with a work computer that has no a cd writer
and a home computer that has no floppy disk. On files too large to send via email, my maxtor is the best solution.
I was able to find much better prices both around the web and in local office and computer supply stores than seem to be offered here. Shop around.

Don't judge too quickly..., May 16, 2005
This review is from: Maxtor One Touch II 100 GB USB 2.0 External Hard Drive (E01E100) (Personal Computers)
Although I do not own the 100GB model (I own the 300GB), I have recommended this model to several of my friends who were looking to buy an external drive. They have been very happy with their purchase and were please with how quiet and fast the external hard drive was performing. The OneTouch feature was also a great feature since they didn't want to put much thought into backing up their software. It's been several months and not only were they able to use it for their PC but when they switched over to the Mac, they didn't even need to install any additional drivers. When they upgraded their Mac to OS X Tiger, it continued to work well. We even used it to make an emergency backup of another friend's notebook.
I regret the other review of this same product and can only believe that he just got a dud. Maxtor is a reputable brand and I would buy again from them anytime.

Good hardware, worthless software, September 28, 2006
This review is from: Maxtor One Touch II 100 GB USB 2.0 External Hard Drive (E01E100) (Personal Computers)
This drive is well made, reliable, and simple to use. However, the Dantz Retrospect HD software bundled with it is worse than useless. It's in that annoying zone of appearing to work, just enough to cause the unwary to waste a lot of time trying to get it to work, without ever succeeding. After several months of on-again off-again results, I have abandoned the Dantz software altogether, and will just use Windows XP to copy the files I want to back-up. I will never use another Dantz software product again.
