I bought this light in Nov 09, it didn't work right out of the package. I wrote a review saying just that. I was contacted by the company and asked if I would accept a new one, and also if the new one was good to please remove the bad review if i wanted to. Well, the new one arrived and it seemed to work. The Maxxima MLN-20 LED night light is one smart little device. It really serves three functions in one; here is the rundown:

The night light contains only LEDs, light emitting diodes, so it uses very little energy (and does not contain Mercury). The night light is light-sensing so it is not on during the day or when other lights are on. The panel over the LED is frosted so the LED is not piercingly bright.

The night light must contain an internal battery because if the power goes off, another LED on the bottom of the night light provides floor level lighting - this would be great during an emergency.

The kicker is that the entire unit can be easily unplugged and then used as a miniature flashlight. The cover on the bottom LED is not frosted, so the flashlight has a pretty good directional range.

There is an easy-to-access switch on the side of this device with the option to turn the device off entirely, turn off the night light function (so only the floor lighting would come on during a power loss) or turn on all the functionality.

The only con I can see for this product is that it blocks both outlets when you plug it in. There is definitely enough clearance over the unused outlet to access it by using a low profile "flat plug." A flat plug is low profile where it goes into the wall (i.e. it doesn't stick up and usually makes a sharp turn.)

Overall the Maxxima MLN-20 LED night light is an economical and practical small electronic device for the home that should appeal to your inner geek.

That is until we had a power failure, or...just when I needed it! This one did the same thing as the other one. The red light is on indicating that it is charging, but when the power goes out, the emergency light does not come on. Another dud! I have since purchased a different brand and all work fine. I'm sorry, but this is just an inferior product.

I recently became obsessed with installing emergency power failure flashlight all over the house. I have three different types, all of which operate with an "off" position option so no light emits unless it is unplugged from the wall or the power fails. This is by far the most disappointing and lowest level of light of the brands I've tried. I would return it if I could without losing my shipping costs both ways.

The best power failure light I've found so far is the Durofix Emergency Standby Plug-in High-Efficiency LED Light. Super high quality, most modern/seamless looking, and FANTASTIC led light output. You can get them here on Amazon or save and get the two-pack at Costco for twenty bucks. ;) I won't buy any other brand now that I've found them.

Second best would be the Energizer Weather Ready Compact Rechargeable LED Light, a decent quality led output but less sleek looking product. I use these in my children's rooms since they most resemble hand-held flashlights and are easy to remove from the wall in a moment's notice. Ideally, have a few of these at higher levels to use as actual flashlights but light the walkway and living areas with the Durofix which are nice and bright - I plan to purchase several of each for grandparents for this purpose. :)

Hope this helps someone - again all three of these products DO have the feature to turn the light to an "off" position so it only comes on during power failure or when removed from the outlet. For some reason I had a hard time finding this information quickly and easily in the product descriptions and it was my most important criteria.

We ordered 5 of these to be placed throughout our house. Hubby opened the first package and plugged it in - perfect, no problems. He plugged in the second - a dud. OK, next package - another dud! Fortunately the last 2 do work, but now we have to ship the 2 defective ones back before getting a refund. Will be looking for another more reliable option.

5.0 out of 5 stars EXACTLY what I wanted!, September 12, 2009

I had a hard time finding the right emergency light for me. I wanted something that gave me the option of emitting NO light at night, but still retaining the emergency feature. This gives me that option. By setting the switch to LED, the light only comes on when it loses power or you unplug it. Then, it can be used as a flashlight. After a full charge, mine stayed on for 9 hours and I needed to go to bed so I plugged it back in. Who knows how long this thing will go on a single charge, but I was so pleased, I am back to order more!!!

You can also use the night light function, but I found it to be too bright for my use. The other con is that this thing takes up an entire outlet, so you'd do well to place it in a spot that you rarely plug anything in.

I am so pleased at how this fit the need I had, that I'm giving it 5 stars anyway. Never again will I have to hunt in the dark for the 10+ flashlights hidden around the house! As often as I lose power, this is going to come in so handy!

I have 3 of these now. All are still working great. My neighborhood loses power all the time. These lights are great because in a 2 story home, it is a major safety issue to have the house go pitch black. I have these strategically placed in outlets where they reflect off of white surfaces and create a lot more light. We've lost power twice after dark (once during an awful storm) and it has been a great comfort to see these lights come on. I'm sure I will order more for the bedrooms.

5.0 out of 5 stars exactly what i need for a great price too, June 4, 2009

These lights are awesome. I got 2 for my home and it's well worth the purchase. Where I live we lose power frequently, and having these have been a major help in the dark. They are perfect for the random plug in the hallways that rarely get used anyway. The sensor is great because I don't have to remember to turn the lights on or off, it's automatic. At night they are a perfect low energy usage light, and when the power goes out the floor light part is bright and works exactly as required. I haven't used the flashlight function, as I have flashlights already, but I'm sure it would work great in a pinch. All in all, a very functional and good quality product for a good price.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mine worked well for two years and then shorted., July 24, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Maxxima LED Night Light/Emergency Light/Flashlight (Misc.)
My Maxxima MLN-20 was purchased in 2009 and worked great until a the summer of 2011 when a loud pop occurred along with a flash of light and the breaker tripped. The back of the unit is black and both prongs are partially melted; however, the flashlight portion still functions. The manufacture paid to have the unit shipped back for engineering evaluation and has discovered what they believe to be a random or rarely occuring internal pinched wire at the edge of a board that caused a short. They claim to have inspected a number of other units and have not found the problem in any other unit. Their explanation makes sense to me. They have been very thorough and offered to replace the unit or refund my purchase price. This is a very good product unless you have a problem like mine. I asked them to send a Maxxima MLS-10 2-LED AC/DC Occupancy Sensor Light as a replacement, as a motion sensor light would work better for my application.

This works as a nightlight when plugged into the wall and the power is on. As soon as the power goes out, it does too. It doesn't work as a flashlight, nor as an emergency back up light.
Pretty pricey for a nightlight. By the way, this is the second one that doesn't work.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best Emergency Night Light I've Seen, May 10, 2010
This review is from: Maxxima LED Night Light/Emergency Light/Flashlight (Misc.)
The MLN-20 works great, its perfect for our application, the unit is small, plugs into our outlet, and provides great basic night light functionality on a consistant basis. Even better, when the power goes out the mini light on the bottom of the unit lights up, to light our pathway, and also can be used as a small flashlight. Dont expect high output from this flashlight, just enough light to get you around the house, and not trip over things.

The light does cover both outlets, eventhough it only plugs into 1, but for a hallway outlet thats fine since we dont use it much anyway. Would definatley reccomend this item to everyone. I have 3, and am going to purchase a few more since these are great for all year use, and esspecially in an emergency..
