Book Description

August 1, 2007

“MacEnulty writes with sympathy, wisdom and—an unexpected blessing—humour.”—Guardian

“A spare, disciplined prose that no one will be able to read without thinking of Hemingway. But MacEnulty has made the style her own.”—The Observer

“The dirty, realistic landscape sometimes steps aside for bittersweet coming-of-age flashbacks, but mostly we’re in swampy hell. Harry Crews would love it.”—Uncut (on Sweet Fire)

Jen Johanssen is a former porn actor trying to fit into the world of academia. Her sister, Lolly Johanssen, is a cancer survivor. Nicole Parks is in prison for loving the wrong guy. And Sonya Yakowski, also in prison, is a member of a family of traveling criminals, desperately missing her young son. The lives of these four women converge in a Florida prison, where Jen and Lolly have joined forces to put on a grant-funded drama production. Despite their remarkably divergent histories, these women come together in unexpected ways, each beginning to confront and forgive her own past.

Pat MacEnulty lives in Charlotte, North Carolina. Currently an assistant professor at Johnson & Wales University, she has taught creative writing in jails and prisons, at conferences for The Sun magazine, and at the Winthrop University Kaleidoscope Summer Arts Camp for Teenagers.

More About the Author

I grew up in Florida and now live in Charlotte, North Carolina. My latest
book is TIME TO SAY GOODBYE.

The premise for the book was suggested by my agent because after reading my short story collection (THE LANGUAGE OF SHARKS) he thought I could write well about women who had shady pasts. Even though I am nothing like Patsy Palmer, the "woman with a past" in my book, I used to be a wild thing. I did drugs in the 70s (a lifestyle I wrote about in my first novel SWEET FIRE) and major drinking in the 80s. Now, I'm into meditation, yoga, and healthy living. I have found I cannot function if I don't take extremely good care of myself.

I love to write. My life pretty much centers around it. That and driving my
teenager around. I'm also taking care of my elderly mother (this entails
lots of Scrabble playing). And I edit people's books, coach writers and
teach for a living. It doesn't leave a lot of time for my own writing, but I
keep at it. I've just finished a new novel. It's called FROM MAY TO DECEMBER and is dedicated to my friend Kitty Gretsch, who died of cancer. There is a character who is a lot like Kitty in the novel, though it's difficult to capture the spirit of someone you love in words. Maybe
impossible.

Who are my influences? My friends, mainly, Pamela Ball, Mary Jane Ryals, Ron Wiginton, Michael McClelland. Very good writers, those people. And my
teachers, too. Sheila, Harry, Jerry, Les. My favorite writer is usually
whoever I happen to be reading at the time, but just for kicks, let's say
Jane Austen, Toni Morrison and Harry Crews.

This review is from: From May to December (Paperback)
I started reading Pat's book on a flight to Costa Rica and I was so hooked on it that I finished it while sitting on one of the most beautiful beaches in all of Costa Rica; I just couldn't put it down. Pat has such a gift for writing and all of her books captivate me. What an excellent book!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars powerful and insightful, June 4, 2008
This review is from: From May to December (Paperback)
This is a beautifully written novel about 4 women searching for answers and find them in ways they'd never have imagined. Every character becomes real. I had a hard time putting this book down and recommend it to anyone who thought it sounded interesting enough to scroll down and read this.
