5.0 out of 5 stars This book should be read to every preschooler & by everyone!, May 6, 2007

This review is from: May I Pet Your Dog?: The How-to Guide for Kids Meeting Dogs (and Dogs Meeting Kids) (Hardcover)
The number of children being bit by dogs is astronomical. This could be drastically reduced, by showing children (& adults) the right way to approach a dog. A child's only experience may be with a friendly dog, or her own dog. Many dogs see an unknown child running up & reaching out at them as a threat and become fearful &/or aggressive. Both responses can cause a dog to bite. Dog bites and attacks can leave lasting physical and emotional scars on a child. Please, read this to your toddler, to your kindergarten class, to any child you are in contact with. Tell everyone you know, that dog bites can be significantly reduced, IF when we see a dog, we know to STOP, ASK the owner if you can pet their dog & only then approach the dog in a non-threatening way. This book is an awesome tool to intruct this information.

5.0 out of 5 stars perfect for the pet-less family, November 2, 2007

This review is from: May I Pet Your Dog?: The How-to Guide for Kids Meeting Dogs (and Dogs Meeting Kids) (Hardcover)
I got this book when my son was two and a half and going to
spend sometime at Granny's with her dachshund. He is
so abusive to our cat that I was a bit concerned about what he
might do to her old pooch when she was in the other room.
This book was great. He asked me to read it every day for
two weeks, and when we go out to the park, even though
he is terribly shy with adults, he will ask dog owners diligently,
"May I Pet Your Dog?" before approaching.
The book was well worth the price because I don't worry
about him messing around with strange dogs now.
And it's really a cute book. It won't give your kids
nightmares about saber-toothed dobermans. Mostly,
it teaches etiquette and respect for animals.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great idea, January 5, 2008
This review is from: May I Pet Your Dog?: The How-to Guide for Kids Meeting Dogs (and Dogs Meeting Kids) (Hardcover)
I work in a vet hospital and constantly watch children walk up to dogs they don't know and nearly get harmed because the dog is a aggressive, sick, injured, or just too playful. These are things that every child should learn about and this book should be in every child's home.

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting concept... very useful, September 6, 2007
This review is from: May I Pet Your Dog?: The How-to Guide for Kids Meeting Dogs (and Dogs Meeting Kids) (Hardcover)
A straightforward primer to show small children the safest way to meet and approach strange dogs. Although this doesn't provide much in the way of dramatic storytelling, it does offer very practical information, in a way that may appeal to kids. Ask the owners first; show the dog your hand and let them sniff it before you try petting them; pet dogs from the side, not over their heads; pay attention to warning signs like crouching or growling, and don't make direct eye contact with an angry or anxious dog. As a narrative, this is pretty clunky, but even if you only get one or two readings out of it, the information they impart will be very valuable. Good for parents, too! (ReadThatAgain!)

We got this book for our 3-year old daughter (who loved dogs) - and it has been wonderful. There are some great pointers in here about how to approach dogs so that they feel comfortable with you, and you are (consequently) safer interacting with them. She loves the book, and she puts the lessons in there to work with our dogs all the time.

5.0 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL!, December 4, 2011

This review is from: May I Pet Your Dog?: The How-to Guide for Kids Meeting Dogs (and Dogs Meeting Kids) (Hardcover)
IN MY OPINION,THIS BOOK WAS PERFECT FOR TEACHING SMALL CHILDREN ON HOW TO PROPERLY APPROACH OR NOT APPROACH A DOG,GIVEN DIFFERENT CIRCUMSTANCES. I HAVE A TRAINED THERAPY DOG AND I BOUGHT THE BOOK TO TAKE WITH ME ON MY RECENT VISIT TO A CHILD CARE FACILITY. I BELIEVE SOME CHILDREN (PARTICULARLY IF THEY DO NOT HAVE A DOG), DO NOT KNOW HOW TO PROPERLY APPROACH A DOG. USING BOTH THE BOOK AND MY TRAINED DOG, WE WERE ABLE TO DEMONSTRATE THE DO'S AND DON'TS. IT WAS AN EASY READ AND THE PHOTOGRAPHS IN THE BOOK WERE VERY NICE AS WELL. WELL WITH THE MONEY!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Guide for Teaching About Dogs, November 24, 2011

This review is from: May I Pet Your Dog?: The How-to Guide for Kids Meeting Dogs (and Dogs Meeting Kids) (Hardcover)
May I Pet Your Dog? could be used as a textbook in classrooms. It teaches how to approach a strange dog exactly as suggested by Canine Good Citizen teachers and does it in a manner that children will have no trouble relating to. I use it in my Reading to Dogs classes and have given each library we go to a copy of this book.
Thank you Amazon for keeping this book in stock.

4.0 out of 5 stars Real dog star's in children's book, August 24, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: May I Pet Your Dog?: The How-to Guide for Kids Meeting Dogs (and Dogs Meeting Kids) (Hardcover)
Looking for a book about meeting dogs that a child as young as 3 could understand whether an older sibling was reading or a grandmother. The book is short enough but the instruction of meeting a dog and asking to pet the dog was accurate. The illustrations are easy to understand even after a reading that a young child could go back and look and ask questions. The star is a real pet of the author and gives the realism for the reader and child. I was happy when I received and read to my kids, the book was sent to growing nephews that ask questions, instruction and meeting animals is important. Learning what to do at a young age may develop good future dog owners. Enjoy! Thank you.

5.0 out of 5 stars May I Pet Your Dog?, January 23, 2011

This review is from: May I Pet Your Dog?: The How-to Guide for Kids Meeting Dogs (and Dogs Meeting Kids) (Hardcover)
This was a Christmas gift for my dog-crazy 5 year old niece. She loved it, plus all of the adults read it and we all agreed it was a great book. It gives a great description (told from the point of a friendly weiner dog) of how the little boy in the book should ask permission to pet strange dogs. Then the dog tells him how to approach the dog if given permission. Also, how to interpret the body language of both the dog and its owner and when to give them room. It encourages children not to be afraid of a dog just because it is big, because big dogs can be very friendly :) (Nice because I have a very large greyhound) All in all, an excellent book that every child should have.

Fun book to teach children proper dog manners. We have always told our granddaughters to ask before appoaching a dog; even ours as they have their moods and good and bad days too. This is fun book to share, teach, and remind about respecting others and their dogs.
