This review is from: May I Quote You, General Lee: Volume II (Paperback)
Randall Bedwell has created an interesting set of slender volumes, collecting quotations of key Civil War generals and those who knew them. The volumes are quite brief, but--nonetheless--interesting to read.
This is one of two volumes about Robert E. Lee. The quotations from Lee and others provide context. Lee's resignation from the U. S. Army? Here is the pithy quotation (Page 7): "I cannot raise my hand against my birthplace, my home, my children." As to his aggressiveness at Gettysburg (Page 18): "If he is there tomorrow, I will attack him." And so on. The quotations run from the outset of the war, through the Confederate defeat, and continuing through Lee's post-Civil War career. It's fun to read, although quite brief. A nice bagatelle! |
