Editorial Reviews

With influences ranging from Progressive Pop Rock to Barbershop Metal, Ideamen is an exhilarating tango of music and mayhem. Formed in Chicago of 2006, Tim Swanson (keys/vocals) & Dave Solar (vocals), united their respective bands, (Ducht Tape Mustache & Soulvasq) to create the Ideamen. Soon came the addition of Mark Vasquez(bass), Dan Figurell(guitar), and Phil Goodrich(drums), to form the mysterious blend of melody and chaos. With lots of new music written and an explosive set, the band then took to the stages through most of '07 & '08 touring the midwest & the east coast.

In 2007, Ideamen released their first spine-tingling EP, Progress , which sold copies throughout the UK, Germany, US, and Canada. The 5 song EP helped Ideamen tap into the experimental rock music scene with the help of such bands as Dog Fashion Disco, Tub Ring, & Screaming Mechanical Brain.

Ideamen have frequently The Double Door, Beat Kitchen, Elbo Room, Reggie's Rock House (Chicago), Peabody s, The Hi-Fi (Cleveland), The Annex, The Den (Madison), The Southgate House (Newport), Otto s (Baltimore), as well as venues in Minneapolis, Detroit, Indianapolis, St. Louis, and Philadelphia.

In 2009, Ideamen have signed on with Los Angeles based, Rotten Records (Green Jelly, Dog Fashion Disco, Polkadot Cadaver), and will be releasing a new full-length release on October 27th entitled, "May You Live In Interesting Times". The band is very excited to be working with Rotten, and cannot wait to come to your town!

4.0 out of 5 stars Patton Who? February 11, 2013

Okay, obviously these guys have their influences. Any argument that they've ripped off a particular artist, however, is unwarranted. Ideamen's debut has tracks ranging from driving metal to piano pop, but it's on common for a song to not contain a bit of both. The heaviest is Horse's Head, but that too has it's pianist moments. From the rip roaring opener to the beautiful closing of your signature here, Ideamen has crafted an excellent full length album with a dozen excellent tunes, as well as much promise for what is to come.

What can I say about this album other than, I LOVE IDEAMEN! May you live in interesting times, i think we do, don't you? The songs on this album will instantly draw you in. The harmonized vocals the amazing keyboards, super tight rhythm section and outstanding guitar riffs will not leave you hanging. Oh and these guys are the most genuine group of guys I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. If you are a fan of great music this album is for you!

4.0 out of 5 stars Refreshing and Original November 1, 2009

First download the Progress EP and buy this CD. I preordered as quick as I could to receive a signed poster and CD from the band. Thanks guys:) This is an excellent album as it draws from many of the bands influences. I can hear the collaboration of every band member to make an interesting but unique style and sound. Lets look at some of the tracks.

1. Interesting Times - (Rating 5) The first track starts off up beat with the signature Ideamen harmonies. "Another day has gone by" kinda describes how I feel these days. Solid track

2. Emergency - (Rating 3) A little slower tempo but has a good feel to it with piano and harmonies blending to form a mellow but peaceful sound. Good track overall.

3. The Rest - (Rating 4) Starts off fading in with harmonies and comes in with cool time change. I particularly loved the backround harmonies during "Blame it on the rest". Phil shows some of his awesome drumming I remember from back in the day with his ghost rolls and quick high hat work. Ahh, I love that sound.

4. Sunshine - (Rating 3) Starts off with a real solid rock beat. You can feel that kick drum instantly. Great track very relaxing track and shows off the main vocals and harmonies.

5. Horse's Head - (Rating 5) Starts off with feedback then blasts off with some awesome dual vocals. This is by far one of my favorites and I think is a highlight of the album. This track has it all. Good tempo, harmonies, heavier guitar and then a change midway through with some acapella accented by drums and guitar. Great arrangement on this track.

6. Incident - (Rating 4) Slow tempoed but very good sounding with the drums piano and harmonies blending well from beginning to end.

3.0 out of 5 stars Exciting, original music marred by weird vocals October 26, 2009
Format:Audio CD
This record is pretty frustrating. The music is simply amazing, but the vocals are hard to digest. I got into Ideamen from previously being a fan of Tim Swanson's older band Duct Tape Mustache. He also played keys for Dog Fashion Disco during their final tour. I heard the Ideamen EP and liked most of it, but the vocal melodies turned me off a bit.

Unfortunately, the same goes for this record. Musically, it is a great combination of modern rock, classical, prog, and various other genres. The piano/synth on this album is definitely the highlight as it really adds a classy touch to the rest of the music. However, the harmonies between singer David Solar & Tim Swanson are weird and not in a good way. They sound like a higher-pitched Jerry Cantrell & Layne Staley the way they blend their vocals together. I don't know, it's not for me. I guess you will have to listen for your self.

If you are one of those people who can look past the vocals and just enjoy the music then I really recommend this album. However, if you are like me, and have to enjoy the vocals to enjoy the music, then you may not like this album.

Still check it out, its very original stuff.
