Mayfair Game's "Global Mogul" is a fun game once you learn how to play it, but there is a pretty steep learning curve. One to four players attempt to create the world's greatest corporate infrastructure by breaking into world markets, obtaining businesses, and fulfilling contracts. Each player receives their own player board which contains their various pieces and workers, and helps to track progress in the game, while the contracts, markets, and company cards are laid out for all to see and manipulate.

"Global Mogul" is a worker placement game in which players must wisely decide how to place their wooden pieces in order to take specific actions. By using your action to break into a new or emerging world market you can obtain resources like gold, technology, oil, and workers (both blue- and white-collar). Those resources can later be spent to fulfill the contracts, which call for certain combinations of resources. Players must also use money wisely and decide how best cash in hand compliments your workers' actions. Additionally, acquiring companies can give your company certain advantages and abilities. After a set number of rounds the players enter into a scoring phase in which victory points are added up. Victory points come from fulfilling contracts, owning certain companies, dominating the most markets or certain geographic markets and more.

The game is fun and quite competitive. Like many great games it gives you lots of options and there are multiple paths to victory. A real sense of excitement begins to grow within a few rounds, and players can feel things heat up as every player is working his own angle for victory. The problem with the game, as noted above, is the learning curve.
