The rules are just complicated enough to make it fun but they're easy to master after a few tries.

EuroRails is a sequel to the Empire builder game system where you as a rail baron construct your rail lines from city to city delivering requested goods to the cities that require them (shades of pirates and travelers)

Each player has three cards with short, medium and long routes available. The amount the delivery pays depends on the distance, as you make a delivery you draw a new card and continue. Now the routes are built by the players, if you can't get your own tracks built to where you want to go you can use someone else's...for a fee. And there are also ferries and the chunnel to get you across seas large and small to England, Ireland and Scandinavia.

Of course there are limits to the number of people that can run to smaller cities, there are rivers and mountains of varying types to deal with, and when you draw cards all kinds of disasters can take place, floods, gales, rail strikes, snow storms, derailments that can slow you down or cost you your hard earned goods. Those who do not keep a reserve in the bank may be a single flood away from doom.

Of course you CAN turn in your cards for a new set, but that will cost you a turn while your rivals will be building lines, delivering goods and maybe upgrading their train's speed or carrying capacity.

There is one solid weakness of the game and that is the system itself, a few bad draws can put you out of the game quickly so the luck factor is larger than it should be, but with that caveat you will have a lot of fun riding the rails across Europe.

The game itself is pretty fun, although slightly on the complicated side. For those unfamiliar with the game, you have to build a railroad (drawn with crayons on the board, and erasable) on which you must transport cargo. A good strategy quickly becomes important as re-using your existing railroads is much more efficient than building new ones all the time. The game can be a bit on the long side (two hours or more) but is fun and can be a good "conversation game" since it does not necessarily require constant attention.

My main problem (resolved, see below) with the game we received is that only about half the commodity cards match the commodity tokens we received. I intend to contact the company for replacements and will update here after I do so with their response. (See below.)

Also, the box is on the flimsy side - not too bad, but you probably won't want this one to be at the bottom of a big stack of games.

Overall it's a great game, but a bit difficult to play with mismatched card/token commodities.

Edit 3-12-12: Not only does our situation with the wrong pieces seem to be a rather isolated incident, but I finally remembered to contact Mayfair about the mismatched pieces and they are sending replacements out at no charge and with no fuss or hassle. Customer service really doesn't get any easier than this; I am very pleased.

This game is great for long winter evenings. Some times you can finish within an hour, some times it may be half the night. However, if you want to take a break, you can just put it back in the box and pick up where you started off when ever you wish.

If you like Settlers of Catan and Ticket to Ride, EuroRails is another great addition to your game collection. It takes between two- four hours to play a game so be prepared to hangout for a bit. The board comes with washable crayons and cleaning instructions for you to mark your "rails" with and just be mindful to follow the instructions when cleaning the board and it will hold up well.

Great game that you get to draw on the board to play. I would recommend any of these games from the series especially if you like train games

I love the Euro-Rails. We started with the USA rails game, and played it until we wore the spots off the board! When I went to re-order it, I was pleasantly surprised to see that it was available for other parts of the world (and beyond) as well. As a school teacher, I'd been telling my girls what a great game it was, and should be included in schools for teaching geography, economics and social studies. I'd been saying all along that they should do the game for other countries, and apparently, they had the same idea!

We didn't enjoy China Rails as much. In fact, we've learned that if you are going to buy a rails game, look for one that's a third edition at least. The first and second editions have some problems that are fixed in later editions. China is only available in the first edition, I believe. It is fun for a while, and is great to learn a bit about China's geography, but we discovered that whoever goes to get cotton first, wins. Period. The payouts aren't enough for most of the other products, and the landscape is riddled with rivers - meaning building bridges! Another issue, is that China gets sandstorms that wipe out tracks, something that didn't happen in any of the other games we've ordered.

But Eurorails is a blast. We play it more than any other version, and we have four of them, including Japan. We plan to buy either Australia or Mars next!
