Mayan Apocolypse is a fascinating who-done-it story that takes place on the Yucatan peninsula in modern times. The author skillfully interweaves his knowledge of Mayan culture and language into this thriller. His characters include Mayan natives, one lonely Mayan detective, Mexican police and two American female anthropology students who are destined to be threatened with death in a unique plot which centers around a possible Mayan revolution against Mexico and modern culture in general.

A good read. Hopefully there will be a sequel.

Smith's intimate knowledge of rural Maya life in Yucatan is so true-to-life that any
reader familiar with the culture will be immediately transported to the villages and
towns of the northern Yucatec Maya. As I read the descriptions of each character,
real faces of Maya men, women, boys and girls that I know appeared in my mind.
Subtle internal struggles that the Maya face between tradition, nationalism, and
progress were genuinely depicted with great care. Tangible mystery and suspense
propel the story forward, begging the reader to turn the next page, but it is within
the descriptive details that the novel gains a legitimate voice. Dialogue is superbly
mingled with internal thoughts and observations of the protagonists. Each page
reminded me of an event, person, place or controversy I've witnessed as a Maya
archaeologist in Yucatan. This ranks highly among my top five fictional novels to
accurately portray Maya life (and death) on the Yucatan peninsula.

I also am a personal friend of the author, and I must say I'm not an avid reader (work and family). Hubert had shared with me some of his experiences on the Yucatan Peninsula, and I was intrigued when he handed me a copy of his book he had recently published. I REALLY enjoyed this story! He has a wonderful writing style, able to keep the reader engaged with historical facts, vivid details and good old fashioned suspense. Interesting characters, fascinating setting, and a true learning experience...I will DEFINITELY be eager to get my hands on a sequel!

Very relevant. Great historical fiction, but mystery that keeps the reader involved until the final pages. This is a book that both informs and engages the reader. Highly recommend.

Interesting combination of mystery, murder, and romance set in modern Maya culture, with a historical perspective. Something for everyone. Mr. Smith is definitely well-versed on Maya territory and culture.
