5.0 out of 5 stars All-around fabulous ring sling

I have numerous baby carriers, and each has its different uses, but the one I love for around the house and short trips is my Maya Wrap ring sling. (I have the Bright Stripes pattern, which is gorgeous!)

It's easy to stuff in a diaper bag. You can quickly pop your baby in and out of it. You can put it on under a coat and put your little one in it without having to take your entire coat off. (A HUGE bonus in wintertime!) The tail is great for providing privacy while nursing. The Guatemalan woven fabric is both lovely and supportive while remaining fairly breathable. It's also very washable, which is great. We've had diaper blowouts and spit-up on our sling, and it still looks like brand-new. (Those silk slings look sooo lovely, but I would be scared to death to put a real live baby in one! Don't the makers of those things know the sort of substances babies exude?)

Bonus: The Maya Wrap comes with a great DVD that I found extremely helpful.

That said, a ring sling isn't perfect for every circumstance. For very long trips or older children, I prefer a more structured carrier, like the Ergo Baby Carrier Black with Camel Lining. Some moms who don't care for the one-shouldered support of the Maya Wrap may prefer the Moby Wrap Baby Carrier-12 Colors with 2 New Limited Colors!!. But while I love both those carriers, if I had to choose just one, I would pick a Maya Wrap, hands down!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Recipe for a Happy Baby, February 16, 2008
By
L. Loyd (Ohio, United States) - See all my reviews
(VINE VOICE)    (REAL NAME)
After having my son, I realized that he would be happy as long as I was holding him. I had gotten an Infantino pack as a shower gift, but my 9 lb. baby made my back hurt very quickly because of the thin straps. I love this baby carrier because it's hands free (so I can get things done!) and my son is very content in it. Sometimes he is all interested in what I'm doing and just takes everything in, and sometimes he just zones out and sleeps. Either way, though, he's happy and my arm is not killing me from holding him for long periods of time. I love that I don't have to take the stroller in to stores and stuff. I alternate this with a Moby Wrap so I'm not just carrying him one-shouldered all the time, but this sling is very convenient (and quicker to get on and off)--I think this'll be my new baby-shower gift! I read Dr. Sears "The Baby Book" and it talks a lot about how good baby-wearing is, and for my son and me, it's been absolutely right.

2.0 out of 5 stars Too difficult to use, and not comfortable for baby!, November 21, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The seller of this product is wonderful, but the Maya Wrap is not for me or my little guy. I guess I am just not a fan of ring slings. I did a lot of research and read a lot of reviews and this is the first baby carrier I decided to buy. My baby boy (4 weeks old when I received the sling) always wants to be held so I was looking forward to being able to hold him all the time and nurse him hands free.

First, I am small framed and the sling kept sliding down so the ring was too low. Then when I tried one of the positions my baby either kept hitting his head on the ring or grabbing onto it. The fabric is not soft and comfortable, it is a bit rough, and the sling does not feel comfortable (for me) when on. But most importantly I don't like the fact that with all the positions except the nursing one, my baby would have to have his legs crunched up in the "frog" position - he hates his legs being confined like that!

I returned it and ended up buying the Moby Wrap which I love - fabric is soft and comfortable, and my baby can have his legs out in almost all the positions. It is also much easier to figure out how to use and to get him in and out of.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best. Baby. Carrier. EVER!!, August 29, 2009
By
Katie (Wichita, KS) - See all my reviews
I cannot say enough good things about the Maya Wrap Ring Sling. A neighbor has lent me hers and I have been using it for the last 7 months. It is so easy to use, convenient to store, easy to clean and best of all it has a customized fit for both the baby wearer and the baby so there is very little discomfort. My son prefers to sit in this as opposed to the Baby Bjorn that we also own because it supports his back and his legs better. The carrier can be used up to 35 pounds and can be worn in many positions. I have personally used it for nursing (the tail makes a great cover up)when he was younger and now use it with him vertical at the center of my chest and on my hip, as he grows I look forward to using it so he can be carried on my back.
Compared to the Baby Bjorn this does not hurt my back or shoulder at all (it feels similar to a larger purse)and it has a small pocket on the tail that is perfect for holding a diaper, cell phone, wallet and bottle. It makes carrying a diaper bag for smaller trips into the store unnecessary.
I am constantly getting complimented on it as it does stand out in a crowd. On a personal note my son was a preemie and one of the things that was done in the NICU was "kangaroo care" where the baby is held to the skin/chest and it helped regulate their breathing and comforted them. When the baby is carried in the traditional vertical position it is nearly identical to this. He even falls asleep in this and it comforts him to be close to me while I am wearing him. I even wore him during a plane flight and there wasn't a single peep. One of the other great features is that you have your hands free. You are able to wear one child while holding the hands of others, or carrying a shopping bag or doing household chores.
Even if this is not your primary carrier it is worth the cost to have it as a back up as you can easily store it at the bottom of a diaper bag. It is a very sturdy product with some of them made of organic cotton. The wrap may seem simple when compared to the belts and harnesses that other carriers have but it is based on traditional South/Central American and African baby wearing slings and the fact that those designs have been around for such a long time should attest to the quality and safety of the design.

5.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't Live Without It!, September 8, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is the best $60 I have ever spent. I don't get the comments about it being uncomfortable to wear and hard to figure out (it's a long strip with rings on the end!). ?? This little number does such a good job of comfortably distributin baby's weight, and the baby LOVES it. She curls up inside as though she was still in the womb. I can even vacuum with her in there, and she sleeps right through it. This is also our method of last resort when she is having one of her rare crying jags and nothing else consoles her.

Sooo many advantages:
1. Such a nice way to be close to your baby
2. Gives both arms free to actually get something done
3. Very comfortable
4. Easy to bring with you because it doesn't take up much space
5. Baby loves it!
6. Great for shopping. Frees up both hands and keeps her content for hours.
7. Easy to tactfully breastfeed in public

Tip: If you are debating about color, go with one of the prints. Any little spit up or smudges don't show up like they would on a solid color.

5.0 out of 5 stars A GREAT work-horse sling!, October 18, 2008
By
When people think of slings, they think of ring slings, and this Maya Lightly Padded should win the prize for best workhorse sling. It is lightweight, but sturdy, with a padded shoulder that works for everyone! It doesn't need the gentle treatment of it's more expensive silk cousins, so it can handle spit-up, diaper explosions, etc. and be passed around the neighborhood. You can use it to hold newborns upright or laying down, and even nurse comfortably. As your child grows, they can be carried facing out to see the world or on your hip for a quick trip into the post office. A medium works for most people, so other caregivers can use it as well. I am a big fan of babywearing in general and this is the starter sling I recommend most highly.

5.0 out of 5 stars love this sling!, November 3, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
after trying out several other slings and pouches (including the peanut shell and balboa baby), i decided on the maya wrap because it is completely adjustable for different users (yes, my husband has used it--even in plum!), its super easy to throw and use and is very well-made. i love that it has a pocket for keys, a binky, or a diaper! i wanted a carrier that was nice enough to wear to special occasions (i wore my baby in this to a wedding, recently). the colors are vibrant and stunning--even better in person! i do have an ergo and moby that i use, but find this sling to be less bulky, much quicker to throw on and very stylish! i love the extra padding on the shoulder... very comfy!

i will note that i am 5'4" and ordered a medium and find the medium size to be a bit too long. when i put my keys and phone in the pocket on a walk, it seems to hit against my knee as i jaunt :P i end up throwing the excess over a shoulder or carrying it. not a huge issue, but thought i'd make note of it!

i shopped around online and in stores and this seller has the best price on the market as of october 2010!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good for what it is, January 12, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I love the way this wrap looks but in the end I had to use a Moby because the ring sling is just too uncomfortable. My baby likes it and slept well in it and it's a lot easier to breastfeed in than the Moby but I found putting all that stress on one shoulder at a time to be painful and the metal rings always inevitably started putting pressure on me. Even switching arms every few hours didn't help. I still use it if I'm going out somewhere socially because it looks better from a fashion standpoint but for everyday baby wearing it's not my first choice. I'm hoping when the baby is a little older and I want to start wearing him on my hip that I'll be able to get some more use out of it. I'll review it again later.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, Wonderful, Wonderful!, February 7, 2009
I absolutely adore my Maya Sling Wrap. I have been using it since my baby was about 3 months old (she's five months now) and it has been, almost literally, a life saver. I have one of those wonderful babies that have been called 'high need'. She needs to be held a lot and I am, unfortunately, human, and I can't support her weight all day long and get anything done. She is also extremely active, and sometimes it's very hard to get her to go to sleep. SHE LOVES THIS SLING! She'll sit in it for stretches of time together while I walk around doing things that need doing, or will fall asleep in it when I can't get her to go any other way. Plus, this is a very comfortable sling, easy to use (after a couple days of practise, but if I can do it, trust me, you can). I love it! Get it!

5.0 out of 5 stars So Convenient!!, July 9, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
For the first 3 months of my daughter's life, ALL she wanted was to be held at all times. I felt trapped because I could barely put her down to go do a simple task like wash my hands or something. After much debate between The Maya and The Moby, I decided on this, and I'm very glad I did. My daughter LOVES it, and it frees up my hands to do things. It also allows her to be closer to me more frequently now. I put her in it to go grocery shopping, to the mall, or to the park. Love it!!
