The civilization of the Maya in Mexico and Central America is one of the world's most intriguing archaeological puzzles. At one time a sophisticated civilization, around 800 A.D., cities were abandoned, temples left unfinished, and a powerful culture vanished. 4.0 out of 5 stars A good introduction to the Maya...., June 1, 1999

Mr. Gallenkamp's short book provides a good, informative introduction into the history of the Maya. He has included a synopsis of each era, focusing on the Classic; and he gives helpful details about the transitions from one age to the next. He also has written some fascinating chapters about the stories of the churchmen, explorers, and archeologists who first dared define the Maya: Landa, Stephens, Thompson, Ruz, et. al. In my nascent studies of the Maya, this short history has given me enough knowledge and information to feel comfortable while challenging my imagination and curiousity to continue on my journey.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved this book, months after reading, December 29, 2011
I borrowed this little paperback. I had little knowledge of the Maya. It was full of glyphs and info that was over my head. The book sticks with you. Loved the stories of the migrations. I read The book of the Hopi next, it was an amazing journey . I recommend this then the Frank Waters book of the Hopi afterwards.
