Book Description

September 2, 2008
The winter equinox—December 21-22, 2012—marks the end of the famous Mayan Long Count Calendar. It concludes the 5,000-year “Fourth Age” and heralds a cataclysmic change; either the end of the world as we know it or the dawn of a new golden age. Gerald Benedict has thoroughly studied the Mayan prophecies that focus on this significant date and discovered that they can only be understood in the context of the special relationship that existed between Mayan religion, cosmology, astronomy, mathematics, and spirituality. Benedict brings this deep knowledge to his enlightening and beautiful gift book, which translates each prophecy poetically, explains its message, and elucidates its meaning to bring Mayan wisdom to life again. Above all, he reveals how this ancient civilization and its prophecies remain relevant for us today.

1.0 out of 5 stars Rubbish, No Connection to Actual Maya Thought, April 2, 2009
By
This review is from: The Mayan Prophecies for 2012 (Hardcover)
2012 is not the "end of the Long Count", it's merely the end of the current baktun, or 400-year cycle, the thirteenth such. The fourteenth baktun starts the next day. There is zero evidence that any Maya believed that was the end of the world, and in fact many references to distant-future dates exist on various stelae. Mayan archaeology is a fascinating subject, but you won't find any of it in here. You might start with Michael Coe's "Breaking the Maya Code", Linda Schele and Peter Mathews's "The Code of Kings", or David Stuart's "Palenque: Eternal City of the Maya".

4.0 out of 5 stars A good overall picture although a bit technical, April 17, 2009
This review is from: The Mayan Prophecies for 2012 (Hardcover)
This is a good read for anyone interested in the 2012 prophecies, however, it is technical so for a layman like myself, some parts were not so easy to grasp, but the main concepts were interesting.

If you're wondering what all the hooplah is about concerning 2012, this is a perfect synopsis. An excellent read, well-researched, concise, and clear. Information that we all need to know and share!
