Great book except for one sentence..., February 22, 2011
This review is from: The Mayan Prophecy 2012: The Mayan Calendar and the end of time (Hardcover)
There is another listing for this same book under a different ISBN number, so I'm not sure if the copies are different, therefore I wanted to rate this particular ISBN.
Let me preface this with I would have liked to have given this book 4 stars, but for one sentence...
I think the book was well-written and scientifically based. I love the fact that David Douglas does not state what is going to happen on 2012, but rather tries to bring all the information together to explain why 2012 is significant to the Mayan culture. He does this in a seemingly objective way and the chapters are laid out logically with summary subsections beneath each one. While there is a lot of information, I wouldn't consider this the be-all-end-all book on 2012, but rather a good starting point. I found myself wanting to know a lot more about particular areas and needed to gather other books. I do not fault the author for this, though, because I think that would have been outside the scope and format of this book.
So what sentence did I knock off two stars for? On page 127, Douglas writes, "The discovery was as great as Howard Carter's opening of the Great Pyramid of Cheops and the revelation of Tutankhamun." Now I know this isn't a book on Egypt, but Howard Carter's discovery of Tutankhamun was in the Valley of the Kings which is approximately 290 miles from Giza, where Cheops' pyramid is located. If he would have written, "The discovery was as great as the opening of the Great Pyramid of Cheops or Howard Carter's discovery of Tutankhamun," I could have agreed. But the way this one sentence was written leads me to think that he believed King Tut was discovered in Cheops' pyramid...or maybe even this was just an honest mistake. Either way, though, it makes me wonder (because I do not know Mayan history as well as Egyptian history) what other mistakes may be in the book - which is sad because I so wanted to rate this 4 stars. I wonder if this has been corrected in the book with the other ISBN?

Great Resource on Ancient Mayan Culture, January 18, 2011
This review is from: The Mayan Prophecy 2012: The Mayan Calendar and the end of time (Hardcover)
Excellent resource for people who want to know more about the 2012 phenomena, and the Mayan Calendar and civilization, in particular. It's written in a very reader friendly way, that doesn't require a Ph.D to understand. I think most everyday people would find it informative. It explains and de-mystifies how the ancient Mayan calendar works. Great illustrations and photos also make the book attractive.
