Until 2 weeks ago, I'd never heard of Hank Brake, & now I can't figure out why. Why he's not on the A-list of country singers, that is. I can't remember the last time I bought an album on a hunch, & then found out that I had bought a real gem. And that, ladies & gentlemen, is what this album is. It has 10 tracks of pure country, with guitars, fiddles, & great steel work by Doug Jernigan. And what a fine collection of traditional country standards, like "you Lied To Me", Back In The Swing Of Things", and the great Harlan Howard/Bill Harvey composition, "Someone Had To Teach You". And the ease with which Hank gets these songs across with just the right amount of feeling, is nothing short of amazing. He has a country voice to die for, one that is smooth & subtle with the ballads, yet rowdy & powerful with the more rollicking numbers. This is a country singer who should be up there with the likes of Daryle Singletery, Mark Chesnutt, & David Ball, cause damn it, he's every bit as good as, if not better. If you like your country true & traditional (and I don't mean Nashville's interpretation of country), then do yourself a favour, go out & buy this album (you don't need to hear it first). You won't be disappointed.
