Absolutely on the mark!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Maybe Days: A Book for Children in Foster Care (Paperback)
This book covers every issue that you will encounter in the typical foster care setting. I can not recommend this book strongly enough. It should be given out as a textbook at training sessions. Nothing we were told or personal experiences that were related to us in training cover what is going to happen with your first placement to your 10th. Do not hesitate to purchase this book and copies for anyone you know that is or wants to be a foster parent. Of course it won't solve the problems that you encounter unless you have lots of patience, understanding and maturity.

Just Like It Is!!!,

A great book for explaining to children exactly what the "system" involves. I highly recommend foster parents and their foster children to read and discuss this book together. It covers every frustration and question a foster child has. It also has some very valuable information for foster parents. I plan on getting one for everyone of my foster children.

Treasured in our home,

This book has been invaluable to children who have been in our care. We read it to/with each new child, who seems refreshed & relieved after hearing it. We often re-read it...& refer to it when tough, unanswerable questions arise. In fact, the kids here now can identify when they are asking a question that is currently unanswerable...& they'll all chime in, "Maybe Days!" with a smile. I'm not suggesting that this book fixes problems. I'm saying that it helps the kids cope with the loose ends & unanswered questions.BRAVO!

I work with children in the school setting and often counsel children who are in foster care. This book is outstanding! Children can identify with the experiences and questions depicted in the text. The book does not sugarcoat the process (e.g., acknowledges that adjusting to life in a new family can be hard), but it does offer hope and comfort and encouragement for kids to live their own lives despite the uncertainties. I can't imagine a better book for this population.

I am an elementary schoolteacher and purchased this book for one of my students who has been in foster care for most of her life. She was able to relate to the book quite well and it sparked conversation between both of us as well as helped me to understand her experiences a little more. I did not have many options to choose from when searching for this book and this definitely is a treasure.

I work for and adoption agency with children in the foster care system and I LOVE this book. I have not found a better book to explain why to a child why they are in foster care and what is happening around them. This book explains complex topics in a very simple and easy to understand language.

My husband and I are first time foster parents for a sibling group of 3 kids who are in their first foster care experience. We are desperate for tools and resources that help the kids transition and make sense of this big change in their lives. The night I introduced this new book, the kids resisted, pleading for a Dr Seuss variety instead. However, all resistance stopped when I read the title to them: "Maybe Days: a book for children in foster care". They were stone silent and ready to listen to this book about them. This book is really well-illustrated and throughout the entire book, the kids pointed to pictures exclaiming "That's me!"..."That's you!"..."That is child services!". Suffice it to say, the kids, ages 4,6 and 8, really were able to identify with the story and were very attentive. This one reading alone was sufficient. The kids have not asked to read it again. They do ask a lot of the same questions that are in the book (Will we go home? Do we get to see our parents for Christmas?, etc). Because of this book, when they ask these questions, we all can rally around the same answer, "Maybe...". This is a good tool to help a foster family with new foster child transitions. Even though we have only read it one time, I'm glad we have it in our home.

First Night Bedtime Story,
By Lynn "eclectic reader" (Michigan) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Maybe Days: A Book for Children in Foster Care (Paperback)
I purchased this book several years ago sometime during the placement of my second and third foster children (siblings). It became the little girl's favorite bedtime story. I read this book to all of our foster children for bedtime on their first night in our home and then whenever they asked for it again. It helped the children realize that foster care did not have to be a bad thing. It helped several to realize foster care meant more people to love and care about them. I highly recommend this book to all foster care families, especially if you're dealing with children between 4 and 12. While the book is a bit childish for a 12 year old, it opens the door for that communication with your foster child that is so vitally important.

Truly Excellent Book!,
This review is from: Maybe Days: A Book for Children in Foster Care (Paperback)
This book is just wonderful! It addresses the reasons why children enter foster care in a realistic but age-appropriate manner. It lets kids know that their feelings are normal...and that it is normal have a hard time adjusting. Maybe Days also addresses the uncertaintly that is such a big part of foster care...will the child live with his siblings again?...will he have visits with his parents?...will he go back to live with them?Reading this book together is a good way to start conversations with children about their feelings and concerns. There is also an excellent guide at the end of the book for Foster Parents and other adults. I'm currently getting certified as a foster parent. I bought this book in preparation of receiving our first placement, and have so far read it with my 6 year old biological son. He enjoyed the book, and it helped introduce him to the foster care system and get a perspective about the child that may soon be living with us. It was a great starting point to help discuss his feelings. It seems appropriate for elementary school aged children.I look forward to reading it with our future foster children. |
