To best describe the sound of Owl City, I think it's almost a mashup of The Postal Service & hellogoodbye musically, and the voice of Sufjan Stevens maybe?
No matter how you categorize it, the music is catchy, light, and will immediately make you want to tap your foot and sing along.

I decided to check out this album upon the recommendation of a friend a few months ago, and I don't think I have ever been more pleased with a recommendation before. This is my absolute favorite album in the new sub-genre I like to call Indietronica. It is a perfect blend of everything I love about the Indie and Electronic genres.
Upbeat and deeply melodic, this album has everything I desire in an album. I cannot praise it enough. You will just have to check it out yourself.

I find it hard to describe this one man band. Kind of like a positive Postal Service sound. The mixing is flawless, the lyrics somehow soothe my mind and the music seems to touch my heart. I feel happy listening. All this from a guy from Owatonna, Minnesota!

I first heard Owl City in a local coffee shop and was instantly enamored by the original soothing yet upbeat sound of the songs. Honestly there is no way you can be stressed, much less angry while listening to this album. The guys voice reminds me of Ben's from Death Cab and Postal service, but the beats and rhythms are purely unique. Incredible.

This CD is both unique and amazing. The mixing is perfect which is shocking because it was recorded in the guys basement. Im hoping more artists take a look at this style of music and realize how cool it truly is. Every song is GREAT!

I cannot imagine why this band is not more popular... maybe it just hasnt been out long enough or something. Its fairly decent, especially if you like Death Cab for Cutie or the Postal Service, it has that relaxing smooth sound.

Purchased this CD for my daughter, 12, who absolutely loves it. I shouldn't tell her this, but I like it as well.

Shipping was quick and nice, and I loved this album. but it looks like this album doesn't have lyrics or photos, that was the only thing I didn't like =)

This album is awesome. A little more juvenile and pure than Ocean Eyes, but some tracks like "Rainbow Veins," "Early Birdie," "Air Traffic," "Sky Diver" and "Dear Vienna" are as good as anything else Owl City has recorded. I love how happy and joyful his music is...something long lost in music these days. It seems like everyone is obsessed with being emotional, dark and depressing, but Owl City flips it on its head. Postal Service has got nothing on Adam Young.

First, a note on the lyrics. I read a few complaints that the lyrics or nonsense and that it detracts from the music. Personally, I think that they're whimsical and fun and in some places actually clever. If you're bothered by the lyrics of bands like, say, Barenaked Ladies, then you are definitely _not_ going to like the lyrics of Owl City. That's not to say that they're similar content, but they're similarly intentionally silly.
As for comparisons with The Postal Service, they're natural enough considering that most people aren't exposed to much synth pop. I'd put this in the same genre of "synth pop light." You could say that it's electronica that's watered down enough for the masses to enjoy it. Or you could say that it's pop music with a healthy dose of bleeps and bloops thrown in. It's a line that was successfully explored by The Postal Service and Owl City is hanging out on the same boundary. It's not an unfair comparison, but don't assume that they're actually going to sound the same. On to complaints about the auto-tune. Some songs use it, other songs don't seem to. I don't think his voice needs it at all, but it adds to the surreal sound he's producing. If you're offended by a hint of the sound of auto-tune, you may want to pass on this one. If you just hate the way some artists abuse the effect, I don't really think he's overusing it. A little disclaimer here. I bought all three albums at the same time (and I'm loving them all - I've listened to them 4 times today). I'm confusing the three albums and can't really give a coherent review of them separately. So far, my favorites from this album are The Saltwater Room, Air Traffic, Sky Diver, and On The Wing. Yes, he talks about flying and travel a lot, but what can you expect from a band called Owl City? |
