I am five and I can read. I love transportation books. I have books by Virginia Lee Burton- Katy, Mike Mulligan and The Little House. I got Maybelle for Xmas. I like the cable car and the Golden Gate Bridge. I like the artwork. I looked up San Francisco on my map and on the internet. If you like transportation, this is a great story!

One of my favorite books one I was a kid, and enjoyable for grown-ups, as well. Some wonderful art illustrating the workings of a cable car, San Francisco scenery, hilly hills with loads of cable car track, and a sweet story giving a simplified history of the train with a cable, and some contemporary settings(contemporary for when this book was originally released)chronicling the rise and popularity of the bus. But not to worry, Maybelle and her sisters win an election to stay in the city by the bay. Extremely enjoyable and under-rated.

I read this title to my first grade library class during a unit on the works of Virginia Lee Burton each year and they enjoy it. We discuss cable cars beforehand and then read it. They really appreciate the artwork and story. Another fine piece of children's literature by Mrs. Burton.

this is a great addition to your book collection. however, there is too much political history on the cable car and not enough story. my child WANTS to like it because it seems like the other. But never underestimate a child's awareness that something is not exactly right. so it's up to the reader to add a little zip to the story to get through some of the "petition/city hall/lawmaker" stuff.

I just bought this book for my 4-year-old son (and myself!). He loves it. The book is about cable cars in San Francisco and is practically a history lesson. It's also fun!

I got through the book with my 2.5 yr old only once. The story line is a bit more complex than other books from the same author, thus I feel that it may be better suited for kids of ages well over 3. It did though make him appreciate trolleys, buses and cable cars. It is a nice story though and the illustrations are wonderful.

My kids love this book so much, we took them to San Francisco to ride the cable cars themselves and went to the cable car museum!

so happy to find this hardback book in good condition. There was a tape label on it that I wish was not directly applied to the book, but overall I am happy.

Loved Like Mulligan and his Steam Shovel as a kid and the Little House book too. This is a great little book with the same heart set in my favorite city and about a really neat piece of history. A beautiful edition too.

This is one of my favorite children's books about San Francisco - my sons loved it - Somehow I missed it was a soft cover when I ordered, so it was disappointing as it was a gift.
