Simply Essential,
By Adrian Somm (connecticut) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Mayday Mix: Derrick May (Audio CD)
By far the most essential, (and evocative), techno/house mix available. For those who don't know, Derrick May is one third of the three founding fathers of techno, the others being Kevin Saunderson (another great mix) and Juan Atkins. His credentials are airtight and so is this mix; A truly educational (check the tracklist), diverse (it spans all sub-genres), and entertaining (listen to those skills!) journey into the depths of one of the fastest growing subcultures. Learn it, Love it...

A superb mix by Derrick May which showcases his talents as a quick fire dj and a modern electronic music leg end.The track selection is eclectic in the best possible way, weaving in and out of house, tribal, detroit minimalism and club friendly fair. It's probably not a reflection of his live sets because there are so many changes in rapid sucession (á la Jeff Mills), however some of the tracks here do often feature live. One criticism: the sound quality is not the may west, however this is a minor quibble and the mix thus is lent a rough live feel. Top marks for finishing up with a Kenny Larkin / Stacey Pullen collaboration which sums up the spirit of the album.
