This game is really alot of fun! Our little group when playing this game ranges from 33 to 15. We all have alot of fun with this game. We have played it so much, the puzzle board is starting to get worn down and the crayons are almost done. Everyone in the family will have fun with this game!

Ok, don't expect to finish any of the Empire Builders games in under 3 hours (we've created some house rules to speed things up, but still, this is a long board game). It's a thinking game, and I find it to be more interesting than a lot of board games out there, which is why it is our go to game for lazy afternoons.
Having said that, our household has created a hack for all of our Rails games that would solves a lot of the other reviewer's problems. We bought a piece of 1/8" thick plexiglass (cut to the size of the board, which is standard for all of our versions so far) and a pack of dry-erase markers to use instead of drawing rails directly on the board- it's easier and keeps the playing surface pristine.

This is a great strategy game for 2 or more people (though with more than 4 people it might be prohibitively slow). We enjoy playing with our 12 year old kids. There is some luck involved, but strategy and careful planning are definitely key. The one downside is that the game can take a long time (unless you use one of the shorter game modifications), but as you get used to where everything is, it definitely picks up. Lots of fun, we highly recommend it.

I've played both Empire Builder and Euro Rails and found Empire Builder to be much easier. It's nice to be able to speed up the game in so many different ways, but even with 2 players and quick rules, most games last around 2 hours. It's well worth the investment though.

Empire Builder is one of four Mayfair "Rails" games that we've purchased in the past few months (Eurorails, India Rails and Russia Rails). All of them are fun and addictive, but Empire Builder is in the top two with Eurorails. Although all are similar, this game has the best looking cards and chips, it's board is large enough to read and play on (India Rails is too small), and the entire game concept is genius. I've found that by playing these games, I not only learn geography but also where resources are found/produced and shipped to. Winning or losing isn't as important in this game, it's just so much fun to play that it doesn't matter.

My son introduced me to the game. With him, my wife, and me playing, our first game took about 8 hours of playing time over two days but we enjoyed it. Our second game took about 5 hours and our third about 4 hours.

A real bonus is the information provided to go online and buy the computer version of the game, which is sort of adictive. You can get a 30 trial version for free that has only the map of the US. With the computer version, you get three play maps, one is the same as the board version (US, Canada, and Mexico) and your choice of others, including Europe, Australia, Japan, and England only.

I strongly recommend using all of the "speed it up" suggestions at the back of the instructions. The most effective of these are 1)deal each player 5 demand cards at the beginning, 2) Start with 65 building credits, 3)start with a "fast freight", and 4)allow 16 track units per turn from the start. Using these changes, a game with three players will last about 2-3 hours.

Another thing we found that helps a lot is for each player to have a notepad and pen to jot down planned moves. Otherwise it's easy to get confused and miss big plays.

After using the provided special crayons for the first few games, we switched to dry erase markers and a dry eraser. Both tend to get smeared and need touching up as you play but the dry markers are easier to mark your track segments with and are much much easier to clean off at the end of the game.

This game is awesome. Strategically build your railroads so you can pick up your loads in one city and drop them off in another. First time players beware: it WILL take some time because you are slowly learning (5ish hours for my 2 buddies and I because we were talking and watching tv also haha) and be wary of the first 2 turns you get to build...the load that pays out the most is not always the one to go for:) But if you enjoy strategy games and want to kill time with friends and family, this is the way to do it! The only minor thing I wish could be different is having the game be updated in it's look. This has nothing to do with the actual game play, it would just be nice to have the train cards and things look a little more modern instead of from the '80s...but that's just me:) Can't wait to play again because we know what we're doing now. And by the way, this was a gift for a guy who LOVES Risk and Monopoly. Empire Builder has hints of both if that helps...

I love Railroad games, but sure didn't like this. I am not elderly, but had a heck of a time trying to see the crayon marks on the board. My daughter was yellow and broke the crayon trying to get it so someone could see the marks. The strategy is great, but you also have to have time for a 3-4 hour game , which pretty much leaves it for weekends. We have teenagers who enjoy games, but to try to convince them to spend 4 hours with parents isn't always easy. I guess your real enjoyment of this game depends on your circumstances and who you are playing with. Probably not the best for busy families with teens.
