Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Gr. 5^-8. Hale follows the Separatists and the Adventurers, beginning with their August 1620 departure from Southampton, England, and ending with the death of Squanto in November 1622. She does a credible job in covering the reasons for the exodus and the major events that transpired, but the book's strength lies in the human details that transform historical names into real people. Readers learn, for example, that William Brewster hid out on board the Mayflower during its departure because he was a wanted man in England; Patricia Mullins (later Alden) had no interest in coming to America and begged her parents to stay behind; and a house-screw, which carpenter John Alden felt was a waste of space, eventually saved the travelers when the Mayflower sprang a leak en route. Frequent black-line illustrations and a diary format add to the appeal; the appended glossary, bibliography, and passenger list will be useful for report writers, too. Kay Weisman

Review

The Mayflower People: Triumphs and Tragedies is a real-life drama drawn from the actual 102-member passenger list of the famous Pilgrim ship Mayflower. Here presented is a very mixed group of separatists, adventurers, and crew members. Of the 32 children listed, two, Oceanus Hopkins and Peregrine Whjite were born at sea: William Butten, a servant to Samuel Fuller, died at sea. Also included is the Native American, Squanto, who played such a pivotal role in the survival of the colonists that first winter in 1620. This true story of the Mayflower crossing includes maps of the Mayflower route, chronological dating of historic events, The Mayflower Compact, Mayflower passenger list, glossary and bibliography, and fourteen illustrations. -- Midwest Book Review

"Mayflower People" is easy to read, but still interesting book. However, I was disappointed there wasn't more personal details about the people who came to America to start a new life despite the danger.
