Book Description

May 1, 2005
The little band of Puritan emigres that left Southampton in 1620 to found a godly colony in America had no inkling that they were the forerunners of the greatest feat of nation-building in the early modern world. In this book Christopher Hilton recreates the lives and aspirations of the Pilgrims, from before their famous voyage on the Mayflower to the far-reaching and astonishing implications of their emigration.

The Mayflower pilgrims were unique in their reasons for leaving their homeland. Unlike the majority of emigrants they were not seeking material benefits. They had fled England for liberal Holland but, after a decade there, feared assimilation so they decided to journey across the Atlantic and try to survive the uncertainties of a new and distant land. Their driving force was freedom to worship God in the way their conscience told them was right. Yet their journey was not easy. They fled from persecution only for half of their band to die during the first winter in America. Disease and a degenerating relationship with the Wampanoag Indians later forced the rest of the colony to amalgamate with a less radical group in Boston.

While the Pilgrims' dream may not have been realised as they had hoped, their self-determination would inspire generations of aspirant migrants the world over. Their legacy played an important part in precipitating the imperial conflict with Britain after 1763 and would later stand at the core of the American ideal during the centuries following independence. Even the US Constitutions was, arguably, based upon the Puritans' own laws.

Using contemporary documents, Christopher Hilton explores the personalities as well as the philosophy of these extraordinary men and women. Mayflower: The Voyage that Changed the World is the first time the complete story of the Pilgrims has been told for many years and it will appeal to anyone with an interest in this epic Anglo-American story.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Complete Story, August 29, 2005
This review is from: Mayflower: The Voyage That Changed the World (Hardcover)
The story of the Mayflower and the voyage of the pilgrams to the new world has been told many times, but usually only in the shortest of ways. In this book Mr. Hilton has carefully researched the pilgrims, their travels and activities once they reached America. He tells the tale with knowledge, respect and a writing style that really leaves you wondering if they will survive the next problem.

Beyond the basic history, he provides some very interesting commentary on the long term effects of the document they all signed, the Mayflower Compact. He traces the sentiments, even some of the wording in the compact to the constitutions of other states, even to the United States Constitution. This was an aspect that I had never seen before.

There is some puzzlement with why they landed in Massachusetts. One document that I have heard of says that it was because they were out of beer on board. The brewing process kills all pathogens in dirty water. This is one way to clean the water for a sea voyage. I have no idea if this is true, but it's a very good story.

This review is from: Mayflower: The Voyage That Changed the World (Hardcover)
I LOVED this book! It had me hooked from the beginning and I couldn't put it down. Honestly the best Pilgrim book I've read so far. I learned so many things about our Pilgrim forefathers that I had never known, and this is coming from someone raised in Plymouth, MA. The book read like a novel, yet was packed full of historical documents and facts. If you want to get the WHOLE story of the pilgrims, the good, the bad, and the ugly, then this book is for you.
