5.0 out of 5 stars A fine second offering. October 13, 2010
Imelda's raw energy and great vocals set to top drawer compositions makes this one great album. Its really quite hard to pigeonhole Imelda's musical style, the best attempt I can come up with is that it is an eclectic mix of 50's genres with a hefty dollup of rockabilly doghouse bass.
My only critisim I can think of, is that I felt a few of the tracks ( Mayhem and Psycho come to mind ) could be best described as pop rockabilly, which probably helped in giving her music the broad appeal that put it right into number one in the Irish charts, though I can forgive this as, like the Stray cats in the 80's it has introduced a whole new generation to a fine and alternative genre of music you just dont hear on the radio these days.
All in all here is an artist that can deservedly be counted among female Rockabilly legends such as Wanda Jackson and Janis Martin. Ireland, be very proud of this girl.

4.0 out of 5 stars marvelous miss may December 24, 2010
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Imelda May's sophomore effort is as solid as her debut, seamlessly mixing rockabilly, swing, Irish folk music, and blues-inspired ballads. Especially noteworthy are the beyond woeful torch song "Too Sad to Cry" and a smokin' cover of "Tainted Love," which Miss May makes her own. What sets May apart from other British sirens, besides having an expressive, playfully sultry voice with great range, is a solid backing band that has worked together for years, giving the music a more genuine sound than any contemporaries who are primarily studio creations. Heartily recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Imelda May a rising stsr May 30, 2011
By Audrey
This album is terrific. Imelda's band now has Steve Rushton on drums and what a huge difference this makes. The music is so tight and energetic when it needs to be; smooth and oh so smooth when it needs to be; and boy can Steve really swing!!!

This band are doing what the "Stray Cats" did in the 80's - writing innovative new modern sounding music with hat tips to rockabilly and, no doubt, Imelda's roots in folk music. This is the real McCoy. Real Musicians playing great music. A pleasant change from overproduced DJ/rap/pop.

Definitely a MUST buy for those who like great rock 'n roll and blues!

5.0 out of 5 stars Yes, you May July 20, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I discovered the music of Imelda May on a Facebook post by Shirley Manson of Garbage. Shirley had such great things to say about Miss May, that I HAD to listen. Her first album "Love Tattoo" had me hooked! Usually with such a solid first album, most artist's second efforts can sometimes disappoint. I dare say I love this album even more than her first. Her sexy siren vocals mixed with the amazing musicians on the album are purely addictive. She can go from a blues growl to a punk rock howl in a heartbeat, often making your own skip one. I have been lucky to see her live twice and let me tell you, her voice is not just studio magic, this lady can sing! If you're looking for someone new, whether you typically like Rockabilly and Psychobilly or not, I think you'll be pleased!

5.0 out of 5 stars What a Voice! March 30, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Imelda May has a voice that jumps out of the speakers at you. Whether its a sassy rockabilly-tinged foot-stomper or a torchy ballad, May, along with her band lead by her husband, a smoking-hot guitar grinder, spans generations and genres with ease.

5.0 out of 5 stars Imelda May Stole my heart February 28, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
What a superb listen. Rockabilly to Irish folk and all points between. Imelda not only has the look, but also adorns the sound of an Angel. With Darrel's low thundering Gretsch backing her up it's just hard to go wrong. Her songwriting skills are nothing to laugh about either. Loved every song on the album including the one that Darrel wrote. This CD has been in my player since it arrived.

5.0 out of 5 stars Blues January 14, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Imelda May has been associated with "rock-a-billy"; however, I think her second CD "Mayhem" is a blend of unique blues, jazz, & rock fusion. "Kentish Town Waltz" is a slow ballad and she just recently recorded it as a duet with Lou Reed. "Pulling The Rug", "Eternity", "Inside Out", "Proud & Humble", & the remix of "Johnny Got A Boom Boom" are all great blends of blues and rock. If you thought Pat Benatar's "True Love" from 1991 was one of her best CD's then you have to have this CD. Some would put it in the jump blues catagory; however, Imelda can't be pigeon holed. Her sound and band are a unique blend of old familiar and unique original, as all but two of the songs on this CD are written by Imelda. The old standup (upright) bass played by Al Gare gives the band a very unique sound and blend of acoustic, electric, and steel instruments with trombone, clarinet, fiddle (Kentish Town Waltz), and trumpet.

5.0 out of 5 stars Imelda May -- and she does January 7, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
First of all, this is her third album, not second as some have written. I don't believe the first was released outside of Europe, however.

I wrote an earlier review before I had purchased the CD, although I had heard most of the songs -- either live or on YouTube. Now I've purchased the CD, and can recommend it without hesitation. Most are great, only a few are merely good. This lady writes most of her own songs, sings them with great passion and energy, and has a great combination of innocence and sass. I met her after her concert in Nashville, TN a year ago and can assure you she's oozing with charisma. I saw her again recently in Chicago on her tour with Jeff Beck and she stopped a song to boot a heckler. Classic.

She's a cause worth supporting, given her talent, work ethic and attitude. She kicked around for years before she "made it," although one could argue she's still in the process of making it as the mainstream remains painfully unaware.

I own hundreds of albums and CDs and like many categories of music, but Imelda has become my all-time favorite female musical artist.
