Book Description

October 26, 2010
Many common health problems can be treated with simple remedies you can do at home. Even if the steps you take don't cure the problem, they can relieve symptoms and allow you to go about your daily life, or at least help you until you're able to see a doctor.

Some remedies, such as changing your diet to deal with heartburn or adapting your home environment to cope with chronic pain, may seem like common sense. You may have questions about when to apply heat or cold to injuries, what helps relieve the itch of an insect bite, or whether certain herbs, vitamins or minerals are really effective against the common cold or insomnia. You'll find these answers and more in Mayo Clinic Book of Home Remedies.

In situations involving your health or the health of your family, the same questions typically arise: What actions can I take that are immediate, safe and effective? When should I contact my doctor? What symptoms signal an emergency? Mayo Clinic Book of Home Remedies clearly defines these questions
with regard to your health concerns and guides you to choose the appropriate and most effective response.

4.0 out of 5 stars Simple guide November 8, 2010
Format:Hardcover
This Mayo Clinic guide is extremely simplified compared to most of the other Mayo Clinic books I have used. Its very simplicity is where it might be of use; so many medical books are overwhelming in the quantity of their information.

There is a table of contents in alphabetical order, which also includes an emergency care section dealing with such problems as; allergic reaction, bleeding, burns, shock. A section on medical supplies for your home and emergency items needed is incorporated. Each medical problem is described individually on a page with a chart of home remedies and prompts to seek medical help if, for example there is double vision for a black eye. An index is also included.

It would be an ideal book for those starting out on their own, maybe going away, even to college where they have to start dealing with their own health problems, rather than depending upon a parent. I can even picture it as a useful book to have on a vacation or somewhere, where the internet is not always available, or if someone might not always be sure of which site is a reliable one on the internet. Even a person just wanting a simplified medical guide could benefit from this book.

The "Mayo Clinic Book of Home Remedies: What To Do For The Most Common Health Problems" is a colorful book of simple solutions for many health problems that you can do at home. Many of them seem like common sense, but then, how common is sense sometimes? The book does not contain a bunch of medial jargon or detailed explanations of the various conditions. Rather, the book simply states problems and then provides home remedies in easy to understand language. If you are looking for more of a medical book, this one is not for you. This book is very non-medical.

Dr. Phillip Hagen and Dr. Martha Millman, both from the Mayo Clinic, are the two medical editors of the book, and their goal was to develop a simple resource that could guide health decisions, offer easy remedies to treat many problems, and possibly reduce the need to visit clinics or emergency rooms. I think they succeeded and obtained their goal, because the book is filled with reliable, practical information on more than 120 of the most common medical conditions and issues related to good health. And the book is very simple and easy. If you have a number of medical guides, you probably don't need this book.

There is a one page introduction, that explains these goals, and then provides a short bit on how the book is organized, which is basically by topics alphabetically. It makes it very easy to find what you are looking for. Then, under each topic there is a short summary that may include signs and symptoms, causes, and possible outcomes. Then there are the home remedies in another section. These describe the simple actions you can take to help prevent, treat, or manage the condition. This could be advice on diet and exercise, changing behavior, or supplements to help relieve signs and symptoms. Sometimes over-the-counter medications are recommended. There is also a small box for each entry titled "Medical Help." These tell about serious signs and symptoms and provide advice on when to contact a doctor or other health care provider and what kind of treatment you might expect. Most of these boxes are just a sentence or two.

There are two pages on medical supplies for your home at the front, and the back of the book contains a few entries on emergency care such as bleeding, CPR, choking, and heart attacks.

The book contains many nice photographs that don't necessarily relate to the diagnosis or remedy, but make the book an attractive and pleasing book to read or look through. Overall, this is a handy practical reference book to have handy when you need it. The simple and easy to understand advice may save you a lot of pain and ache, as well as money by treating common health problems yourself at home. This is especially for those that don't know much medical information, and are not looking to know much. It's for those that just want the simple basics that they can use.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing October 8, 2010
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
There was very little insight in this book. I had hoped for some real remedies that I had not heard of, or some evidence to support remedies that I had heard of. Instead, this book is full of advice that most people already know. It is completely sensible, but would be useful for someone who needs very, very basic information. I had hoped for some more new ideas.
