There is a table of contents in alphabetical order, which also includes an emergency care section dealing with such problems as; allergic reaction, bleeding, burns, shock. A section on medical supplies for your home and emergency items needed is incorporated. Each medical problem is described individually on a page with a chart of home remedies and prompts to seek medical help if, for example there is double vision for a black eye. An index is also included.
It would be an ideal book for those starting out on their own, maybe going away, even to college where they have to start dealing with their own health problems, rather than depending upon a parent. I can even picture it as a useful book to have on a vacation or somewhere, where the internet is not always available, or if someone might not always be sure of which site is a reliable one on the internet. Even a person just wanting a simplified medical guide could benefit from this book.
Dr. Phillip Hagen and Dr. Martha Millman, both from the Mayo Clinic, are the two medical editors of the book, and their goal was to develop a simple resource that could guide health decisions, offer easy remedies to treat many problems, and possibly reduce the need to visit clinics or emergency rooms. I think they succeeded and obtained their goal, because the book is filled with reliable, practical information on more than 120 of the most common medical conditions and issues related to good health. And the book is very simple and easy. If you have a number of medical guides, you probably don't need this book.
There is a one page introduction, that explains these goals, and then provides a short bit on how the book is organized, which is basically by topics alphabetically. It makes it very easy to find what you are looking for. Then, under each topic there is a short summary that may include signs and symptoms, causes, and possible outcomes. Then there are the home remedies in another section. These describe the simple actions you can take to help prevent, treat, or manage the condition. This could be advice on diet and exercise, changing behavior, or supplements to help relieve signs and symptoms.Read more ›
The beautiful cover, overall format, the quality of its paper as well as its graphics are outstanding. No
less impressive is the expected professional reputations of its writers. However you should never judge a book
by its cover as the saying goes and in this case all the aforementioned qualities are in play. I have to
state that I am not even an M.D. I am just a another reader in search of the Mayo Clinic wisdom. At the end, I could not find a modicum of personal satisfaction. I have not read the entire book, Thanks God. I read those chapters devoted to special topics of relevance to me. For the most part, what I read in those chapters I had already known from my medical readings through the years. I did find a few ideas and suggestions that were new to me or interesting to remember yet I would not have bought this book for this reason alone. Mine is just an opinion with very little details, I know. Keep in mind I am just a common reader, another regular patient. To conclude, this book requires more detailed descriptions, explanations, suggestions of the topics in question without becoming medical encyclopaedia or perhaps this is the reason that I don`t feel comfortable with this volume. I am hoping that it will get a much better review than mine. N.Alvarez

Didn't like the book very much. I thought it would have more of the "old timey" cures. This seems more like a simple first aid handbook.Published 9 months ago by Traveler
