Review

Based on the original syllabus for the Mayo Cardiovascular Review Course, this book offers an excellent resource for those preparing for the certification exams as well as for trainees and clinicians wanting to update their knowledge of cardiovascular diseases. Doody's Notes, May 2013 Mayo Clinic Cardiology: Concise Textbook edited by Dr. Joe Murphy and Dr. Margaret Lloyd has again redefined the art of boiling down overwhelming concepts in a merciful manner for practicing cardiologists. With plain dialogue complemented by diagrams and tables, residents and fellows can build a solid knowledge base in cardiovascular disease, as well as prepare for board exams. I would strongly recommend this textbook as a learning tool and reference to guide your cardiology practice. Carmelo Panetta, MD, HealthEast Heart Care, St Paul, MN I first became familiar with Mayo Clinic Cardiology when reviewing for my first recertification exam in Cardiology. One of my cardiology fellows leant me a copy of the First Edition. It was extremely easy to read, and I felt prepared for the recertification exam. I again used this textbook, Third Edition, for my second recertification exam... The Fourth Edition, much like the Third Edition, reaches an excellent balance of being comprehensive while remaining extremely readable... It is an excellent resource for anyone preparing for certification or recertification in cardiology. I would recommend a cardiology fellow devote six months to reading the textbook cover to cover. They will find it well worth the time invested. The practicing cardiologist will be able to cover the text book in a month. They will find it both an excellent review and an efficient way to learn new information. Howard Kurz, MD, FACC, Cardiovascular Division, Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis, MO Congratulations to the editors and their esteemed group of authors on an excellent new edition that is a comprehensive, up to date, and state of the art textbook on the entire spectrum of cardiovascular medicine and disorders. This book could serve as essential reading material for internal medicine residents and , particularly, trainees in cardiovascular diseases, including for preparation for board exams. Additionally, this textbook would be a thorough resource for busy practitioners, including those in primary care and specialists, who care for patients with cardiovascular diseases. Carl "Chip" Joseph Lavie, MD, FACC,FACP,FCCP, Department of Cardiovascular Diseases, John Ochsner Heart and Vascular Institute, The University of Queensland School of Medicine, New Orleans, LA and Department of Preventive Medicine, Pennington Biomedical Research Center, Baton Rouge, LA

This book doesn't really need a review. If you are looking at it, you probably know that it is thorough, continuing a solid Mayo tradition into a new edition. The format is much the same, with an outline, text, and review of key points. Helpfully, each section has a short summary, printed over a light grey background, in order to stand out, so after reading a section, you can glance back through and remind yourself via these short summaries of what you have learned. If you don't remember the details, it provides a helpful reminder of what you need to study more.

The text has about the same level of depth than the ACCSAP 8, but does not have the extensive sample questions of that resource. Additionally, ACCSAP has larger print and is helpfully broken into smaller, lighter books which are easier to carry around to study from. It is helpful that the echocardiograms are not in Mayo format, but in the more widely accepted format for apical views. That being said, I think there's only one apical 4 chamber view in the book.

I do find that the ACCSAP is easier to read, with less "data density" per page. But once I have seen the material a few times, this is easier to use as a reference, without unnecessary explanation.

Overall, a solid one-volume source for board review and study, as a fellow this has been helpful to give me a grounding level of understanding, from which to proceed to more in-depth study. And when I take the board exam next year, this is going to be my capstone review material.

EDIT: It worked, I passed. If I had to repeat the process I'd just stick with this, it is more similar to the exam questions than the ACCSAP material.

I was reading the ACCSAP8 but decided to give this a try. The third edition is completely outdated but this version is spot on with current guidelines. Maybe there is some information with too much detail, then you just ignore it.

I am happy with the book but wish this came in PDF version. IT IS A PAIN TO CARRY THIS MONSTER AROUND! I am even thinking of ripping the book into 5 different sections because of how uncomfortable it is to read.

Figures are great, some chapters really good, like the one on infective endocarditis. There are no references, which is very bad. Some chapters are incredibly bad, with completely wrong informations on ACC/ ESC point of views on some topics.

I used an older version of this for initial board certification (and liked it) but won't be using it much for recertification. My study method has changed since then - I study at my computer now. Many textbooks are providing online resources - some good, some bad. This one's online interface is not good. By comparison, the ACCSAP allows the user to save and edit a PDF version of the book. This means you can highlight and take notes in the text. With the Mayo book that is impossible, as you are only allowed to download a PDF version of a single chapter.

ACCSAP is more expensive, of course, but for me the ability to use my computer is pretty important, and worth the extra cost in this case.

the format is not as friendly as Dynamic Echocardiography. It would be perfect in that format ! please update it.

This is easy to read - well divided into manageable topics and detailed enough to really help review the subject.
