5.0 out of 5 stars good washer
After seeing so many negative reviews I thought I should step in here. I think this washer is great. I had the full size Maytag Neptune but we sold our house and bought a used RV with this washer & dryer combo already installed and used. I've been using it for 2 years and have had a few issues but no real problems except the door seal getting moldy and smelling...

I purchased this washer 28 months ago and have had to replace the door twice since. The cheap plastic door frame is all that holds the door onto the metal hinges. We have no children in the house and there is no abuse to the door other than normal open/closing so over time the cheap plastic cracks around the top hinge (in my case) and there's nothing holding the door onto the hinge now so it hangs when you open it. Eventually the whole frame cracks and the door has to be replaced. It's costly and ridiculous that you have to throw an otherwise good door into the landfill every year. Disappointed with this product and should have done more research before buying it becasue there are many bad reviews online for this product. Do yourself a favor and look at another front load space saving washer before purchasing.

1.0 out of 5 stars Do not buy - shoots water out the back, June 29, 2009
This review is from: Maytag MAH2400AWW 24 Compact Front-Load Washer 2.1 cu. ft. Capacity - White
The washer has been OK for me except for one feature - it has a pipe connected to the top of the clothes barrel, and sometimes when it is spinning, water comes out the top, through this pipe, and then directly down the back of the washer. This is BY DESIGN. There is no way to connect this to your drain pipe unless you do that yourself, and there isn't even an easy way to do it. I am NOT talking about the normal drain pipe - my machine has that ALSO - and it is connected correctly and works correctly. Maytag designed some kind of overflow to go out the top of the barrel and down the back of the machine - right next to the power cord, even! It took me a while to realize this, and now I've got a slightly rusty machine (where the water drips down) and I have to dry the back of the machine every few uses. Find another machine that does not have this 'feature'.

1.0 out of 5 stars Unmitigated disaster, February 11, 2010
This review is from: Maytag MAH2400AWW 24 Compact Front-Load Washer 2.1 cu. ft. Capacity - White
The person who designed this washer should lose their license.

First of all, the drainage has no filter, so if you accidentally put, say, a penny in the washer - or a pen cap or a button or any other such small, hard item that commonly finds its way into a wash load - it will lodge into the drain pump, which cannot be repaired, only replaced. This happened within several weeks of first using the washer, and took several more weeks to get replaced.

We have a toddler, so the child lock is an important feature. The child lock on this unit is simple for an adult to activate and impossible for a child to release. Only problem is, the child lock does not impact the power button! So in the middle of a load, if your curious child happens to depress THE BIG ATTRACTIVE ON/OFF BUTTON RIGHT ON THE FACE OF THE MACHINE, the washer shuts down in the midst of its cycle. Genius, huh?

But here is the best part. The outer perimeter of the spinning element of the washer is outfitted with a ridged rubber ring. And within that ridge is a cardboard-like substance which, when wet, turns into a slimy, smelly goop. Yes, you read that right. THE INSIDE OF THIS WASHING MACHINE CONTAINS A SUBSTANCE WHICH TRANSFORMS INTO A SLIMY GOOP WHEN WET.

As I said, the person who designed this machine should lose their license. Only that's not good enough. After that he or she should spend the next several years traveling to every household in the country that purchased this unit and apologize.

1.0 out of 5 stars Headache!, July 17, 2008
This review is from: Maytag MAH2400AWW 24 Compact Front-Load Washer 2.1 cu. ft. Capacity - White
I'm getting ready to replace the door for the second time, and it's not even 3 years old. It stinks and it sounds like there's a rocket taking off every time it spins. To make things even more frustrating, it takes the matching dryer and hour and a half to dry one load. I bought this for it's compact size, but it was a terrible mistake.

I never write reviews, but after searching once again online for a solution to the many problems we've had with this over the last 2 years, I had to pipe in so hopefully you won't make the same mistake. I actually can't believe they're still selling this piece of junk. It takes forever to run a load, the drain gets clogged easily (a dime or paperclip, left in a pocket will have you working on this for hours unless you want to call a repair man to your house). I seem to only be able to use one type of environmentally unfriendly detergent to keep it from oversudsing, I could go on an on. Stay away from this machine at all costs!!!!

1.0 out of 5 stars worst washer ever!, January 19, 2011
By
J. (Silicon Valley) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Maytag MAH2400AWW 24 Compact Front-Load Washer 2.1 cu. ft. Capacity - White
I avoid writing reviews, but this machine is such a large piece of junk, I had to write this as a warning to others. I bought this washer due to the small size of my washing area and the mistaken belief that Maytag made quality products. What a mistake!

Within the first few months, I had the door break. It's flimsy plastic, and it cracked. Replace the broken door and notice that the washer is leaking around the door seal. Run all the diagnostics, check the fill valves, drainage, etc. and no problems, it just leaks. Looking at the design of the door, it makes me wonder if it was ever supposed to be water-tight - there's just no way to get sufficient leverage given the construction and location of the hinges and the plastic door.

Today, I notice some rust on the floor of my wash area by the washer, and discover that the lip of the door opening which the rubber seal is clipped to is completely rusted out due to the water leaking out the front due to the poor construction.

I hope whoever designed this pathetic junker was fired. I am never buying another Maytag product, ever. And don't even get me started on how underpowered the matching dryer is - 1.5 hours to dry a single load? Lame!

Do yourself a favor and AVOID THIS WASHER.

1.0 out of 5 stars Do not under any circumstances buy this machine, October 23, 2010
This review is from: Maytag MAH2400AWW 24 Compact Front-Load Washer 2.1 cu. ft. Capacity - White
We have had nothing but problems with this washer and matching dryer in the three years we have owned them. They have each been repaired multiple times. These machines are poorly designed, poorly made and a disaster waiting to happen. The washer got clogged today (for the third time). Probably a coin or paper clip. We are not getting it fixed. These are the worst appliances I have ever experienced and I am 55 years old......

1.0 out of 5 stars Avoid like the plague, January 27, 2011
By
This review is from: Maytag MAH2400AWW 24 Compact Front-Load Washer 2.1 cu. ft. Capacity - White
On the upside, this washer fits in tight spaces, provides lots of wash cycle flexibility, and, in my experience, isn't too noisy. But we've had two of them, and I just can't recommend it to anyone.

First, it gets smelly. Soap gunk builds up inside the drum, which you need to wipe out as best you can every once in a while. Our clothes don't get smelly (as far as I can tell) or stained, but it's kind of gross. Using the right detergent helps, and you also need to remember to leave it open to dry out when you're not using it. But this is just the start of your headaches with this unit...

Second, it's too easy for coins, paper clips, etc. to get into the drain pump because there isn't anything, like a filter, that prevents them from doing so. If you forget to take all of the pennies out of your pockets (which will happen eventually), it's likely that one will get behind the drum and into the drain pump, at which point you'll hear a horrific grinding sound when the washer drains. In the best case scenario, you'll stop the washer in time and will be able to remove the coins from the pump. (It's relatively easy to do - search online for "Maytag MAH2400 coins in drain pump" or something like that to find out how - although it requires going through the bottom of the machine to disconnect and remove the drain pump. Voila! You'll find the culprit, which is fulfilling in a perverse kind of way.) In the worst case scenario, your drain pump will get shredded, and you'll have to replace it (approx. $100 I think).

Third, you'll likely face a variety of other problems. Some reviewers here have had problems with the door or with leaking water. We haven't had either of those problems, but our first unit crapped out when the drum essentially broke so that it couldn't hold the belt. After over a month of waiting for the Maytag repairman to get a new drum in stock with repeated assurances that "we'll have it soon!" (they eventually concluded that they wouldn't - their customer service isn't very good), we ended up getting a new one (did so rather than getting a different washer because we also have the Maytag drier that sits on top of the washer). Now, after about 18 months, our new one won't spin either. We're getting the dreaded 3E error code (search for it online) which indicates that something is wrong with the motor or control board. I'm going to spend a few days trying to figure out what's wrong (and there's lots of online info about how to fix the many problems with this unit), but as our laundry builds up, I'm just not sure what I'll do. Pay a few hundred dollars to a repairman who may not be able to fix it anyway? Buy another one? (Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice.... well, we had reasons for getting our current one. But fool me three times?!?!?) Or just switch to a whole different washer set-up?

If this is the type of excitement associated with your washer that you want in your life, then by all means, consider this washer. Same applies if you like being a handyman and want a wide variety of problems to diagnose and fix in your appliances (especially if you're not careful about cleaning out your pockets). But if you're like me, and you just want a washer that works - for an extended period of time - then avoid this model like the plague. (A last point is that you can find lots of reviews for this model elsewhere online, and I have yet to find a set of generally positive reviews for it.)

1.0 out of 5 stars Do NOT buy this unit!, October 12, 2010
This review is from: Maytag MAH2400AWW 24 Compact Front-Load Washer 2.1 cu. ft. Capacity - White
Like many other reviewers, I wish that I had checked more reviews on this washer before I had purchased it. We've had the machine for 4 years and we are now looking for a new machine as the routinely breaks down every year. It's leaked, the pump has gone a few times, the motherboard was replaced, The motor died, the unit has mould (even though we followed all instructions for keeping the unit clean). Awful unit, do not waste your money and buy something (ANYTHING) else. $900 for a machine that breaks down routinely????

1.0 out of 5 stars Do Not Buy this Piece of Junk!, May 31, 2011
This review is from: Maytag MAH2400AWW 24 Compact Front-Load Washer 2.1 cu. ft. Capacity - White
Do not make the same mistake we made and buy this total piece of junk! It has broke down 4 times since we bought this in 2008. When I say "broke down" two of those times it actually caught on fire. Maytag refused and still refuses to replace the unit. They don't even care that they are manufacturing a product that is dangerous and could start a fire. Instead of sending out for another third party Maytag repairman I'm going to throw this out on the curb and go buy a new washer. Definitely never going to buy another Maytag and will spread the word to stay away!
