This is Otis Kline's only planetary romance not set on Venus or Mars. It's interesting in having the hero, Ted Dustin, start the conflict, though unintentionally. The most interesting aspect of the book is probably the sheer number of pulp genre tropes Kline plays with here--everything from yellow peril reminiscent of Sax Rohmer's Fu Manchu to Buck Rogers-style gadgetry to ERB-like planetary romance to space opera. Unfortunately Maza doesn't hold together very well. Pacing is uneven. This is unusual for Kline, who after his first novel, generally had a solid feel for how to pace his stories. Dustin does a number of stupid things that, rather than build suspense, are jarringly out of joint with his actions at other times. Many scenes--especially the climax--are rushed and not developed properly. It just feels as if Kline just didn't apply himself as well as he could have. On the other hand, the parts where he does apply himself shine. Overall, this can't come close to matching his best work sadly.
