Some important details lacking,
By 655321 "Tom" (Indiana) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Mazda 323 and Protege, 1990-2000 (Haynes Manuals) (Paperback)
I've been using these Haynes books for years, and this is the worse one I have found yet. The things that are good about it (described in the other reviews) are good only because there's nothing better out there. This book has two main problems: first, the photographs reveal too little, and have too little definition. They also were taken with components removed--but the problem is that removing those components is usually not described in that particular section. In fact, it doesn't even tell you that it should be removed. Example: in order to get to the thermostat, you have to remove the distributor. But it doesn't tell you that. Also, in order to get to the fuel filter, you have to remove SOMETHING. But it doesn't tell you what. Second, steps are skipped in the descriptions--important ones. Not only are they skipped, but they are inadequately described. Example: In order to realign the distrubutor (which, by the way, you have to do if you take it off [which, by the way, you have to do if you want to replace the thermostat]) you have to get the number one piston at top dead center (TDC). The book tells you to align the notch on the crankshatp alligns with the T mark on the timeing plate. What timing plate? Where? The picture helps nothing, it doesn't show what angle it's taken from--it's completely random.
So, I'd try to buy it used. They just have gotten lazy with these things over the years. They need to remember: on foreign cars, you can't skip steps, because everything is buried, everything is in the way. I'll withdraw this review when someone at Haynes emails me to help me out with my distribultor problem: [...]

Complete tear down and rebuild. These manuals are excellent. I wanted to make sure there was a note that this is for the years MAZDA 323 & Protoge 1990 to 2000 inclusive. If you have the new style protoge, don't get it!!

This review is from: Mazda 323 & Protege 1990 Thru 1997 (Automotive Repair Manual) (Paperback)
It is a really handy manual by which you can find lots of information from maintain routine to specific repair guildlines. Very useful to the first car ower like me. It helps to decide when to do the right service to the car and teaches how to detach all the parts for repairing or replacing purpose. Moreover, the content is well organized,it is easy to find the exact instruction and illustration.

This book is more than enough professional for a regular user like me who does not know a lot about cars and more important has not tools other than few screw drivers and a couple of pliers! But if you are a amateur mechanic and Mazda Protege is your new car, it is good to have it and read before doing tens of Try and Fails! Because I bought a used one in very good condition for only $6.60, I am satisfied but if it would be a new over $18 one, I would be disappointed because I can use only %20 of book.

I am not a mechanic but a simple owner of a Mazda 323. I am delighted with the clarity of the manual and how the authors explain all needed maintenance procedures.
Definitely, a "must" for anyone interested in his/her car's maintenance. Thumbs up!
