Grade 4-6?In this episodic fantasy set inside a painting, step-siblings Caroline and Hector learn that they can count on one another for support and friendship. The painting is the creation of a student who is chronically at odds with Caroline's father, an art professor. It swallows the children and leads them to a mountain populated (for the most part) with figures from ancient mythology. A mermaid tells them that the only way out is "...forward, up, and through," so they spend most of the story trying to reach that goal. In the end, Caroline is ready to accept the fact that her father has a new life and a new family. The premise of the book is solid, if a trifle jerky. Unlike the classical originals, the creatures the youngsters encounter are rather easily manipulated. The story is plot driven, so the lack of depth in the characters is forgivable.
