More capable, but slower,

I tend to go back and forth between security products from time to time...like many, I have multiple computers, and somehow I think it's safer to use a mix of security products rather than standardize on the same product everywhere. I haven't used McAfee for a few years, but I decided to give it a try this time as it came preinstalled on my new laptop.
Compared to Norton and most of the others, the basic features are very similar. The product detects and removes viruses (more than 200,000 types, according to the vendor) and spyware, while also including anti-phishing and identity theft protection. One unique feature of McAfee is that it periodically makes copies of key system configuration files, enabling you to restore your system to a known good status should something bad happen. Another unique feature I liked was that the product evaluates the security of web links as they are displayed, highlighting suspicious links before you're tempted to follow them. I also found the administration and policies more useful than the competing products - very much appreciated. It can be a little complex at first, but if you like to have fine-grained control of security policy, this is the best product I've seen. I personally found a few of the features less useful, for instance, home network security. I tend to secure my system at my router (which acts as a firewall), and I generally leave the network inside my home relatively open. McAfee's home network protection didn't impress me as adding anything worthwhile to this mix. The product installs easily on my Windows Vista system and I was up and running in under ten minutes. Compared to the Norton (Symantec) product (which I run on another computer), McAfee seems slower overall, but less "spikey". The Norton product tends to be faster overall, but when it does something resource-intensive (like download signatures), it tends to be more noticeable. McAfee is sort of the opposite - it's slower generally, but performance seems more even and consistent. Still, the only time I'd say it was objectionable were times when I'd have a huge amount of incoming email, especially email with lots of attachments. These conditions slow down my PC, and a quick visit to Windows Task Manager reveals McAfee as the culprit. Still, overall this is a fine product that's stable and capable of providing top quality security protection.

This antivurus software is a piece of junk. It first installed fine, then it didn't catch a very common virus and I had to format the computer. After I did that I reinstalled the software and it doesn't let me register since it says it is already registered on another machine. I contacted the costumers service and they don't know how to solve the problem. I will look for a different software.

Had McAfee previously on my computer but when I tried to install this product it would not install. But it did completely screw up my operating system. I could no longer access any programs or internet, not even system retore. I had to completely reinstall my operating system and all my programs. It took me a week just to get my computer running again. Even after reinstalling my entire operating system, it still would not install. Had to install a different antivirus all together. It would have been easier just to throw my $24 out the window. I will never use McAfee again.

It says in product title 1User. If you look at the lower corner of the front of the box it says 1 PC. If you are one user - which I am - but have two PC's - which I do - this product will only cover one of the PC's. I had to pay for an additional subscription fee - $10.00 - for my second computer. I'm not unhappy though, and believe that the price was reasonable. 1User = 1PC.
Another glitch I ran into that I didn't before in the installation was on my older computer - the one I had the additional fee - I kept getting an error message saying I did not have enough memory to install the product. I think I corrected the problem, and was relatively ok to correct - but I have to wait and see if it works ok. So far so good.

I have been a Mcafee fan for 2 years and when my product expired, I obviously sought out for the latest edition. First off: good price. $10 plus a reasonable shipping fee. That's always a good start; but it seems that the transition to Windows 7 has not been very kind to Mcafee. It always seems to shut off every time I start up my computer or update it, so i have to constantly keep tuning it on manually every time I boot up my computer. This can be a hassle when I'm installing new software. Not only does it shut off, but it seems a bit slower than the previous versions. Oh, and if you prefer not to have any desktop icons like me, then your out of luck. Every time I delete the icon it just re-appears after I boot up my computer. This is very annoying and Mcafees solutions have not solved this or the shutting off issue. Overall, this product is pretty sub par now. It gets the job done, but it's a bit unstable. I'm pretty disappointed, but I will still use this product until I decide on an alternative. I'd suggest the same for anyone else.

This product should be called "Single User McAfee". "Plus 1 user" indicates one may add this product on another computer. Dropping the "Plus" would also work! I bought this product and had to send it back because I needed to protect 2 computers. I was able to buy protection for 3 computers for almost the same price as the "single user" McAfee. Still have not received credit from the vender who I returned it to.

Installed with no issues on XP computer. Was much cheaper to buy this new product than to renew the existing contract for another year even tho' Norton owns McAfee. Go figure. The title was a bit misleading at first as I thought it would be for two computers (as it says: Plus ONE user) but I read the evaluations before ordering and knew that to not be the case.
It has worked flawlessly with no slowdowns on the computer as with previous programs. A good deal.

I bought McAfee as my first anti-virus software in 1998. It was $19 for standalone one year or at $38, you got lifetime updates. I went for the $38 package. Guess what, McAfee reneged on the lifetime updates. I called them a few years ago to try to get some satisfaction and they said they didn't know what I was talking about and hung up.

Slowed down my system to a crawl...,
This review is from: McAfee AntiVirus Plus 1User 2010 [Old Version] (CD-ROM)
Several weeks ago I purchased a Dell Mini 10 netbook which came with a free trial version of McAfee Antivirus pre-installed. Since it was free (for a limited time), I went ahead and installed it as soon as I took the netbook out of the box. For the past several weeks I have done nothing but complain about the netbook. Every operation (internet, Word, Outlook, etc.) launched and operated brutally slow. Viewing web pages on the internet was like going back to the days of my old dial-up modem - - I would sit there for literally minutes waiting for a simple webpage to install. Word would launch slowly and working within documents was miserable. I was seriously giving thought to calling Dell to complain or return the netbook.
Well, the free trial version of McAfee expired after 30 days and rather than purchase continuing coverage I decided to uninstall McAfee and install a copy of Norton instead. That was a very smart move on my part. Suddenly, my netbook was operating blazingly fast. All programs launched quickly and webpages loaded almost instantly. My apologies to Dell for thinking it was a problem with their netbook (The Dell Mini 10 is great!), although I do blame Dell for selling this netbook with AntiVirus software that so miserably bogs down its system. I cannot recommend McAfee Antivirus to anyone for any reason. There are many other alternatives available that do not hog system resources and bog down your computer as much as McAfee. (Norton 2010 is very highly rated and I currently have it installed on all of my computers). Check out the Amazon reviews and make a wise purchase.

Was very satisfied with the prompt delivery and packaging. One thing I liked was that after making a mistake with registration, it was easy to get help on line. Mcaffe updates the program often which is good. CT
