To work effectively, McAfee VirusScan 7.0 Professional operates on many levels. The new Hostile Activity Watch Kernel (HAWK) constantly monitors your PC for viruslike activity and integrates well with many e-mail clients. VShield runs constantly in the background, checking files as you open them. Even if you choose to disable VShield, the program still protects Microsoft Office files by checking them before you open them. It also protects against dangerous e-mail scripts by looking for suspicious behavior. Any suspect activity is stopped immediately.
For users using Windows 98, 98 SE, or Me, there is the Safe & Sound function that takes copies of your documents and keeps them safe in the event they are corrupted or damaged. Note that this does not work with Windows 2000 and XP.
Some of the latest viruses can stop antivirus programs from working properly once they have infected a machine. If you suspect this is the case, you can boot your PC directly from the McAfee VirusScan 7.0 Professional installation CD-ROM, ensuring a clean environment for it to run in. You can also create a boot floppy to do the same thing.
Like the other products in McAfee's security range, McAfee VirusScan 7.0 Professional uses Instant Updater to constantly check for and automatically download product updates when you are online.
Of course, any antivirus product is only as good as its ability to stop viruses from infecting your system. Happily, McAfee VirusScan 7.0 Professional has been given a 100% rating by Virus Bulletin (although this assumes you keep your product up-to-date with Instant Updater).
The Professional edition of VirusScan 7.0 has several features not included in the standard one. The secure erase feature allows you to remove files from your PC in a far more secure way than by simply deleting them, thus protecting your sensitive data. You can also tidy up your temporary files and browser files automatically. This saves disk space and can make your PC run a little faster, too. A final privacy feature is the ability to remove MRU data. This controls the most recently used files list you see at the bottom of many programs File menus.
McAfee VirusScan 7.0 Professional Edition is a worthy update, and existing users will appreciate the improved security this release offers, as well as its additional features. --Iain Laskey, Amazon.co.uk

Much worse then previous versions,
By A Customer
This review is from: VirusScan Professional 7.0 (CD-ROM)
Virusscan 7 is big disappointment over the previous versions. The interface is clunkier, the background scanner often experiences a massive memory leak, which will eat up 700MB of Ram/Swap space before crashing, and it's a pain to get to the advanced options. But my biggest problem was that if you EXPLICITELY opt to not install the firewall, Mcafee still puts a rudimentary filter in (just no GUI) that has a tenacious ability to hose your internet settings. Windows will complain that it is unable to create sockets, and as a result many server applications will not work (Apache, Telnet).

Mc.Afee professional 7.0 review,
By rob love (Henderson, NV) - See all my reviews
This review is from: VirusScan Professional 7.0 (CD-ROM)
What can i say...i love Mc.Afee professional 7.0. It allows me to monitore all trafic in and out of my computer. The Virus Scan feature is constantly monitoring my computer for viruses and worms. Mc.Afee professional 7.0 is easy to set up and easy to use. Product upgrades are fast and walks you through the process. After you register Mc.Afee professional 7.0, you are signed up for 24/7 product updates and the best part is that it is free. I prefer it over any-other product and suggest it to anyone who wants to protect thee computer form hackers.

More like a virus than a scanner,
This review is from: VirusScan Professional 7.0 (CD-ROM)
I upgraded from 6.0 which I liked. Initially this product pops up every day with a dialog box which must then be dismissed, asking if you would like to upgrade your product. If you say yes, it takes you to a promotional page which does not actually provide upgrades. Then a couple months ago, a software upgrade included "Security Center". With this, the promotional popups grew worse. This included a "Security rating" which is nothing more than an index of how much McAffee stuff you have and NOT how secure your system really is. They make it look more "scientific" with numbers such as "5.8" if you have virus scan and not the rest, but this is not a real metric. The software is very intrusive and interferes with using my computer. I have had NUMEROUS dialogs with McAfee to turn off these undesirable features. They do not read the complaint, provide incorrect information, question whether I purchased it (I did and from their page) and generally not even really acknowledge what is wrong. I have nine months left to go on the update subscription. I am ripping it out and buying Norton .. that's how much I hate it.
