5.0 out of 5 stars Timeless Classic, April 13, 2011
This book has been out of print for a while, was last published in 1990. I've had a copy for about 25 years. It's still a good refresher on occasion and spells out in a very basic way the differences between various types of tackle, the type of lines to use, the knots required, and the basic baits (as known and available in 1980). Vic Dunaway's book, Bait, Rigs, and Tackle, was its natural successor, however it is also somewhat dated as it was published in 2002. McClane's Encyclopedia of Fishing, of course, is much more comprehensive than this book, which was really intended as a pocket guide for the angler. That said, the Encyclopedia was last published in 1998, so it is clear there is a need to fill the gaps and cover the advances in tackle and fishing gear that has occurred since 1998 at a minimum. Unfortunately, I have yet to see anything that matches McClane's depth of attention to the subject or his detailed, nuanced writing. McClane was a great outdoors writer in the tradition of Lefty Kreh, Jack O'Connor, and Jim Carmichel. Hopefully, someone, somewhere, is patiently laboring on a Fishing Encyclopedia worthy of the name.
