From School Library Journal
Grade 5-8-U.S. history texts mention McCormick and the mechanical reaper, but don't give much detail. Because of his dislike for fieldwork, especially harvesting grain, his life work was dedicated to developing a successful mechanical reaper, and, as a result, building a manufacturing empire. Black-and-white photos and period sketches with brief captions add to the text. The writing is balanced, presenting varying aspects of McCormick's personality. As a young man, he was reserved to the point of being thought conceited by some. In later years, he was highly respected, but could be very aggressive, suing anyone whom he thought had infringed upon his ideas or patents in any manner. While some descriptions of the mechanical operations are confusing, most of the text is strong enough to make this an additional purchase.
