I knotted up my calf muscle on a run and needed a calf support. In a panic I bought three different brands and tried each. The McDavid was the only one that worked while the knot was still there. That's because not only does this one compress, it also generates heat well. It really did a great job for me and this combination allowed me to continue my workouts. The downside is that because it generates heat, you sweat, which runs into your socks.

Be aware they sell these one at a time instead of in pairs like most do.

After my calf was better, I switched to the 2XUs which are lighter, better looking, and compress well. However, they don't generate heat and are expensive. The 2XUs are great for calf support for maintenance, but not if you need heat to get you through it. 2XU Calf Guards

Hope this helps.

I wanted to make this a specific post for deadlifting because most of the reviews are for runners. I found that these are great for deadlifters looking to protect their shins. I tried different kinds of socks without success until I discovered these. They provide a nice amount of padding while at the same time, the smooth part of the bar slides easily across the neoprene. It does leave your lower leg a bit sweaty but it's worth it to not have the bleeding and bruising, unless you like that sort of thing. Highly recommend.

It says on back to measure around the mid calf, My guess is the thickest part of your calf, and the size I got for that guess was dead on. My calf measures a little over 17 , so I got the XL, I thought they might be a little loose, but they are very very tight. But its important to remember, thats how they are supposed to be. Its there purpose to compress to support. I have been consulting with an ironman marathon lifetime runner because I just , after 7 years, got back into running. Another thing to remember is, when putting these on, do it when your skin in dry, it will not slide well on wet skin from sweat and such. And, do it fast, slide it up to the proper position which is a hair before the bending area behind the knee. If you go slow, even within that small amount of time, the little bit of warmth it causes can make you perspire just enough to make it hard to pull up.
When some people start out (like me), people with large calves or new runners tend to be prone to give out from lactic acid buildup and these , with proper stretching and calf massage for a month or so, depending on the person, will alleviate that completely, or at least they did with me. Now I no longer need them.

Here is the size chart on the back of the package they come in.

12-14 inches = Small
14-15 inches = Medium
15-17 inches = Large
17-20 inches = Xlarge

Wash and care is says to wash in warm water with a mild detergent , rinse thoroughly and drip dry. Wash as much as you can, the salt from your body will not only bother your skin, but degrade the material in the support. I wash after every use.

I have been dealing with shin splint pain and suspected stress fracture in one leg for many weeks now. The crutches that I was given were irritating a previous shoulder injury, and the heavy boot I was given was wreaking havoc on my knee joint. I needed something lighter to wear around the house that would give an extra level of support to my leg. After only a few hours of wearing this support, my leg is nearly pain-free. I think I'll wear it for an extra margin of support when I ease back into my running program. I only docked it one star because, yes, it's neoprene, and neoprene doesn't breathe. When I remove it, it's all sweaty, but I just wash it with some liquid soap under the faucet and let it dry overnight. The correct size felt a bit too snug when I first put it on, but it's fine now - I can't really tell I'm wearing it.

I really don't ever bother giving my feedback on items... However, I think this is a different case simply because my review can help others in need of a good sleeve.

I injured my calf really bad a couple of months ago playing basketball where I couldn't play. So I went home and applied the RICE First Aid - helped a lot! However, a week later when I thought it was normal, (wrong), I went up for a rebound and it happened again! I started RICE again and the following week it happened again. I was told that my problem is that I didn't get enough time off from playing - I needed to stop playing for 5-8 weeks (that wasn't going to happened). I considered a cortisone shot and I know that it was a bad idea after talking to the coach... but he suggested a good calf sleeve. I did my research online and decided to go with McDavid #441 Calf sleeve. All I can say is that this thing is amazing! It has helped so much that I forgot that I injured my calf. So if you need a good sleeve to help with your calf pulls, strains, whatever... then this is your sleeve - McDAVID!!!

Btw: it does retain a lot of moisture but not to the point of dripping down your leg like some expressed. When I take mine off, there's sweat there but its neoprene what do you expect!!??
