The #6440 HexForce Knee or Elbow Pad is one of McDavid's most popular and versatile pads, featuring proprietary HexPad material in a versatile, lightweight, protective pad for the knee or elbow. Individual hex shaped pads conform to and move with your body for solid comfort and continuous protection, while compression fabric holds the pad firmly in place and keeps muscles warm to prevent pulls and fatigue. HydraVent hDc Moisture Management Technology keeps you cool and dry, as well.

HydraVent hDc

(1) This material results from a patented process that permanently bonds hydrophilic (water-attracting) molecules to mid-weight and heavyweight synthetic fiber surfaces, ensuring HydraVent hDc remains intact even after numerous washings.

(2) As you exercise, your body produces perspiration to cool itself and this perspiration condenses on your skin and builds up heat and discomfort.

(3) Moisture is pulled away from the skin by the wicking ability of HydraVent hDc, so your skin remains cooler and drier, and your body's temperature management system can do its job more effectively.

(4) Once the fabric absorbs the moisture, it is spread rapidly across a broader surface area for faster evaporation, and this evaporation draws heat out of the body.

(5) Finally, when moisture is one molecule thick, HydraVent hDc starts its drying process, allowing for a consistent and rapid moisture transport ability over a long use time.

Hexpad
Hexpad Technology is a patented padding system that permanently bonds dozens of individual athletic pads into fabrics. Because the pads are individually applied, they move with and conform to the body for continuous protection that isn't bulky or restricting. The material is machine washable.

I suppose it should have been obvious, but I could not tell if this was a single or a pair. The description says pad, not pads but it is indeed a pair. Just thought I'd throw that in there in case anyone else was confused.

I got mine originally for my knees and it was a Large. When it got here it's only big enough for my elbows. I'll include the sizing for everyone's reference (from the back of packaging):

Size - Circumference
XS - 7.5-9" or 18-23cm
S - 9-12" or 23-31cm
M - 12-16" or 31-41cm
L - 16-20" or 41-51cm
XL - 20-23" or 51-59cm
XXL - 23" + or 59cm +

Comfort feels ok for my elbows but may return it to fit for my knees :)

Here's a suggestion for Tough Mudder gear. I gave these knee and elbow pads an extreme beating at Tough Mudder. I wore them over compression UnderArmor. Once the mud was finally power washed out they looked as good as new. Where UnderArmor alone would have shredded down to the skin underneath, these pads survived without a scratch. The pads also provided light support compression for those with knee injuries without being restrictive. They did not bunch up or pinch or move out of position even after 12 miles of running, climbing, crawling, jumping, swimming slogging and sliding through mud and obstacles. If you are at the upper end of the knee or elbow circumference measurement in a given size, buy the next size up as they run small.

I am 6'4" and a big guy. I wanted some extra knee protection under my hockey shin guards. The knee pads are low profile and the XXL fit my legs perfectly. They slid under my shin guards and I never even noticed then during the game.

When I ordered it was unclear to me if these came individually or as a pair - to clarify, you get a pair.

Highly recommended.

When I first looked at them I thought they were kind of cheesy because of how thin the padding is, but looks can be deceiving. I use them when I goalie (hockey). The bottom of my knees were getting abused by my Bauer goalie knee pads. I had bought 2 volleyball knee pads before these, but both didn't work out. The Nike one didn't help what so ever and the other one broke down too fast. These have been holding up great and feel very comfortable.

I use the pads for Aikido - they have the right amount padding for "knee" walking without the bulk that would restrict movement.

As my team's goalkeeper in an adult soccer league, I've cycled through several different brands of knee pads to protect myself from those diving saves to the unforgiving turf. What I've discovered is that each brand of knee pad presents varying trade-offs between three factors:

1) Protection. If your primary concern is protecting your knees from impacts with the field, turf or hardwood playing surfaces, then you'll want to select a bulkier knee pad -- either one with very thick padding, or perhaps even one with a hard outer shell. Those types of bulky knee pads do a great job with protection, but the trade-off is that their bulk tends to affect your freedom of movement, your overall mobility.

2) Coverage Area. Sometimes the impact will occur right above or below or to the side of your knee cap. Ideally, you want the knee pad to provide at least some degree of protection to the immediate area surrounding your knee cap.

3) Fit & Feel. This is a key factor that is often overlooked. The last thing you want to be doing is readjusting the position of your knee pad after every sprint, slide tackle, or impact with the ground. And what if the play is continuing and you don't have time to readjust them? In that instance, with your knee pad askew, it won't even provide you with proper protection and coverage -- which defeats the entire purpose of wearing them!

After several practices and games using the "McDavid Hexpad" knee pads, I've found them to provide the best balance between PROTECTION, COVERAGE AREA, and FIT & FEEL. Their design is unlike any I'd previously seen. They utilize several nickel-sized pads that are spaced slightly apart to allow for a better range of motion and flexibility.

Bought a pair of these and they lasted less than one half of a basketball game before the material tore and the padding was coming out. My 9 year old daughter does spend a fair amount of time on the court diving and skidding for loose balls, but that's why we bought the knee pads in the first place. She did like they way they felt vs traditional ones so we tried another pair and the same thing happened. I hope they can improve the durability of the fabric in the future cause she really liked the comfort.
