5.0 out of 5 stars SHOULDER CONTRAINT
I FOUND THE McDavid Shoulder Support through Amazon after a brief search in my local area failed to produce the desired item. My dcotor diagnosed my shoulder injury as an "abused muscle strain" and recommended a month of limited use, minimal elevation and no lifting, twisting or stretching. The McDavid brace is a snug and comfortable reminder of my limitations. It is...

3.0 out of 5 stars Bulky and uncomfortable, May 25, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I purchased this shoulder support after I strained my shoulder playing sports. I was hoping it would help limit my shoulder movement and allow my shoulder to heal. However, because the support is so bulky, it would not allow my arm to hang flush to my body. This actually caused my shoulder to ache continuously, which was extremely uncomfortable and defeated the purpose of wearing the support.

Pros:
-Inexpensive compared to other options
-Easy to put on (with someone's help)
-Provides good support vs. taping or wrapping
-Immobilizing strap attachment provides additional support

Cons:
-Bulky and bunches up under your arm
-Holds your arm in unnatural hanging position
-Pretty much impossible to put on by yourself
-Very difficult to adjust without assistance if you have to wear for long periods
-Makes you hot and sweaty if worn for long periods

I FOUND THE McDavid Shoulder Support through Amazon after a brief search in my local area failed to produce the desired item. My dcotor diagnosed my shoulder injury as an "abused muscle strain" and recommended a month of limited use, minimal elevation and no lifting, twisting or stretching. The McDavid brace is a snug and comfortable reminder of my limitations. It is durable and well constructed. The only thing I would like to see improved is a wider chest strap with a larger velco zone.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not for busty women!, July 20, 2009

This review is from: McDavid Shoulder Support with Strap (Sports)
I ordered this product to help with the pain of my rotator cuff tendonitis.

There is no sizing chart, so I used a chart from a different but similar product to guess what size to order. It was WAY off. I am 5'4" average build female with a DD chest, and a medium did not fit at all. I could get the velcro chest strap to touch under my armpit, and managed to see that the pad on top of my shoulder had "tented" up on the edge closest to my neck to the point I could put a fist underneath it. The arm band was way too tight, and my upper arms are not big. The portion of the neoprene in front of my neck was actually choking me.

I ordered this style of support despite having seen a review elsewhere warning women with large chests that it would not work; I just had to see for myself. Even if I swapped this product for a larger size, I do not think it would ever fit me properly.

The "bulkiness" people have spoken of in their reviews refers to the top of the shoulder area; there is a 1/4 - 1/2" thick chunk of neoprene sewn onto the top surface of brace for some reason. It looks and feels like a football shoulder pad (on a female, at least)!

It came with one black-and-white sheet with some instructions. They were technically correct, but difficult to understand even with the product right in front of me. I just used trial and error trying it on until it looked right, and I never even got to the strap system.

The stitching on the neoprene seemed adequate.

If it had fit, I would have kept the support, but my two "McDavid Shoulder Support with Straps" are going back a.s.a.p.

I am giving it 1 star because of the lack of a size/measurement chart, and for how it does not fit women well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very pleased, June 1, 2010

My son dislocated his shoulder while playing baseball and was having a lot of residual pain in the first couple of weeks after the dislocation. He used this support and felt significantly better with it on as opposed to no support. He currently only wears it when he is lifting heavy objects or performing strenuous work. Overall, we have been very pleased with it.

I bought this brace for my son to wrestle in. He loves it, and the trainer loves it too.
I had to buy another one as back-up, just in case he loses it!

Amazon was great they issued a full refund no problem. This is made with an unbreathable material trapping your own heat, kind of a poly-foam like material. My husband could not take the heat & said it felt like he couldn't breath. We loosened it up to no avail. We had to remove it within 1/2 an hour. To bad, the premise is a great idea.

I injured my shoulder in high school playing football, and now that i play rugby in college, this product really helps keep my shoulder where it belongs. its bulky, but i like it! i also like the strap pretty tight around my chest, which constricts breathing a bit, but rather safe than sorry.

2.0 out of 5 stars not quite there, December 30, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
There is a reason you see so many different brands selling different types of braces and supports for ankles, knees, wrists, elbows. It's because for the most, they tend to work, and users may want to replace them or try something even better in the process. There is a reason you just don't find as many options for the shoulder, with some big companies not even having a single product for this body part in their line. It just does not work too well, or better yet, it won't have a decent success rate. This shoulder support is well built, and I like the concept. But shoulder is a complex joint, with too many variables involved when things go wrong. I am not saying this product could not do wonders for some, I just don't believe too many will benefit from it. For me it did not work, I could not find ways where at rest and during activities my shoulder would feel more supported. With the use of athletic tape or kinesio tape a well trained therapist or trainer can attempt to reduce the mechanical load that the affected tissue(s) naturally undergo in order to reduce pain and possibly enable healing to occur. With this product this is much harder to accomplish. Again, it may work for you, but I believe you may have to hold your expectations low until you try.

5.0 out of 5 stars wonderful AIDE, October 23, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
After 2 failed surgeries . One a reconstruction and then a shoulder replacement (which lasted 3 years) the implant is loose and floating around in my shoulder . This is NOT as pleasant as it sounds . while waiting on a total reverse shoulder surgery I bought this to help alleviate my pain and add to strengthen my shoulder joint as it is very unstable . Product is great . I wish I'd purchased this rather than had 2 surgeries . Shoulder instability is horrible and this brace keeps my shoulder from popping out of socket . Not for everyday use but nice to take a walk without ending up in the ER.
