4.0 out of 5 stars its surprising how fun it is, February 18, 2008
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: McDonald's Treasure Land Adventure (Video Game)
Strangely, one of my best memories of the Genesis era. it plays in a standard 2d side scroller style. you control Ronald McDonald through 4 worlds full of levels with unique sites and environments. you jump, throw what looks like magic fireworks at your enemies and use a ribbon as a sort of grappling hook.

Basically the story goes like this, you were walking through the Magical Forest when you stumbled across a treasure map. the only problem is that most of it is missing. its up to you to hunt down all the pieces track down the treasure.

the graphics hold up to any other game on the system, with much more variety than many other games.

not too much of a challenge. it was one of the only games i could actually finish as a kid. maybe thats why i liked it so much. a ver good, nostalgic way to spend an afternoon.

4.0 out of 5 stars Looks Stupid But Is Actually Superior, November 4, 2011
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: McDonald's Treasure Land Adventure (Video Game)
As the second person to review this game, people might be surprised that it is once again receiving a 4-star review. No doubt this is a title that many kids passed on due to the corny-looking cover, the silly sounding title, and the fact that you play as Ronald McDonald, the clown from all the McDonald's commercials. I myself only rented it out of sheer curiosity as a kid.

In hindsight, the game was made by Treasure, the same company that brought us the Genesis masterpiece Gunstar Heros. The company was assembled by programmers that left their jobs at Konami, another highly regarded gaming company during the time. Man, did those guys know how to crank out some quality games or what.

The title screen is pretty cool looking when you start up, as you see a ragged looking treasure map flapping in the breeze. Once you start playing you are treated to some very bright and varied colors on par with Toejam and Earl Panic on Funkatron. The music is a notch above average. Yes, the challenge is a little on the low side due to the game being made primarily for kids, but even older gamers will enjoy the platforming action of having Ronald repel and leap across chasms and use ziplines to speed around the levels.

The sound effects are also a notch above average, and actually sound better than the sound effects you will find on most other sega genesis games. I would have to say that when you take something that is an above-average platformer but you can combine it with stunning visuals and good music and sound effects, the game is elevated. This game is a true treat on the eyes and ears, and if you can get past the silly story and the fact that you are playing as Ronald McDonald, then you will definitely enjoy this game. You really can't say enough about how this game looks. The backgrounds are all very nicely animated and have that early 90's imaginative flare that speaks of above average creativity and artistry.

The one aspect of the game that I always found to be very cool and creative was the boss fights. Defeating them isn't all that hard, but the boss battle music was very cool and the set-up for fighting the bosses was neat. When you defeat the boss, exploding cartoon stars assault the screen in bursts. You have to see it to truly appreciate it.

So most people are going to poo-poo this game despite never having played it because its a silly Ronald McDonald game, and alot of these are the same who blindly praise games like Gunstar Heros and ToeJam and Earl. But if you've ever played this game, you know that this is definitely a unique specimen to hit the Genesis and that it further cements the legacy of Treasure Games. Try it before you hate on it.
