Simply amazing,

I can't believe the negative reviews submitted by others on this text. The text is meant to be used with all of the ancillary materials (Workbooks,Personal Tutor CD-ROM, Notetaking Guide, etc.) There are also transparencies for every chapter. The entire mathematics program from Larson is designed with this format. These are high school level mathematics courses and at the Houghton Mifflin website you will find college level mathematics courses by the same author. In fact, this author takes you from beginning Algebra all the way to Calculus and Differential Equations (high school thru college). I was so impressed with the computer tutorial CD-ROM because everything is explained in detail and there are computer quizzes to take after every lesson segment. These quizzes were designed to verify comprehension of the material before the student moves forward to the next lesson. Great job by all of those involved in putting this program together!

Don't listen to what the other people are saying. I got first hand experience on this book. I must say that this is probably the best and most easy to understand math book i have ever used. The answer key in the back allows the user to assure that their answers are correct. If you are considering buying this book, i must say YES, DEFINATELY BUY THIS BOOK, IT WILL BE WORTH YOUR WHILE!!!!

This book takes you by the hand step by step. It eases you into algebra without you suspecting. Selected answers and self tests help you asses your learning. The book is also interesting with colorful pictures and real to life equations.

I majored in mathematics in college.
Also my son used this textbook in his Algebra 1 class. I thought the book is better than average but not great. There is a nice clean format with review problems and practice tests. However, I thought some things could have been explained better.

Its pretty good,
A Kid's Review

I used this book in 9th grade overall it was a pretty good book. It gives for the most part clear explanations on how to do the work. A problem is that some of the examples were a lot easier than the book work was. But if you pay attention to the teacher that shouldnt be a problem. It has all the uneven answers in the back so you can see how your doing which is a good thing. Overall not bad it got me through algebra all right and combined with teacher explanations you should understand it.

Why there are these different reviews,

This review is from: McDougal Littell Algebra 1: Applications, Equations, Graphs (Hardcover)
I had this book in freshman yr. as well as the geometry book that follows in sophmore yr of high school. In my own classes i often found that the people whom said bad things about the book such as those in the following reviews are the people who either did not pay attention in class, or did not care about the subject enough to put the effort to try to understand the matter. On the other hand, some of the concepts were a little advanced, but my teachers usually explained them in a way we could understand. If the student is doing their job as well as the teachers there shouldn't be a problem with this book. I would strongly recommend it.

I am a retired Engineer, and I tutor kids (approx. 6) every week, even through the summer. I have not been very impressed with this book for 2 reasons. For one, the book does not contain the solutions to any of the problems. I had no idea that this was a thin soft bound book either (as apposed to a hard bound book). I am not impressed with the selection of topics either....though about 70-80% is meaningful.
I wouldn't suggest buying this book. I have been tutoring Math for over 40 years.

The book by itself is good, BUT how can anybody practice MATH without an answer key !!,

Hi All,
I bought this book after reading a review that the practice book had answers at the back. It turned to be wrong...Please do not write wrong info, any1. The book by itself is good for Algebra practice if the kid or whoever is learning it has an expert guide or teacher available offhand. Without the answer key, it would be impossible for a novice learner to ever know if he got the wrong or right answer!! Go for the book if you are confident of your Algebra skills... I bought this book as a supplement with the original Textbook.... it is same chapter by chapter.I have some help.

My daughter had to do an independent study course to improve her high school GPA. We enrolled her in independent study, but the school had given out all textbooks. While she could do the work, it was proving to be tough going without seeing what the textbook was covering in a given chapter. So I searched Amazon and found the book. It arrived a few days later, and it's much better for my daughter now. We plan to doonate the book to the school when she is finished with the course. Thanks Amazon, for being there when we needed you!
