5.0 out of 5 stars This book can save your life!
This kind of information saved my life when I first started reading about it 20+ years ago. I was hospitalized with a life-threatening colon blockage. I was told I would need to be on medication the rest of my life. After reading some of Dr. McDougalls's books, I was blown away how with easily my doom and gloom illness evaporated.

In my humble opinion,...

2.0 out of 5 stars Good Intentions, Poor Presentation
John McDougall certainly knows what he's talking about when it comes to nutrition, so I have no idea why the content is so weak. You'll find more in-depth information on his website, forum, and YouTube channel for free than you'll ever find in this book. I certainly recommend his diet, and have had great success myself, but if you're looking for a book with more science...

In my humble opinion, Dr. McDougall ought to win the Nobel Prize. He has been way ahead of his time (at least in this country) for many years. His latest book addresses some of our most common illnesses and diseases and how you can easily doctor yourself to good health. The book is an easy read and covers any question you might have from what goes into your mouth all the way through to when it comes out. Though I consider myself well-educated, I learned new things. Especially helpful was the part on how to decide if you need a colonoscopy, something the over-50 crowd is being pushed to consume. I only wish books like these were required reading for educators, all health care professionals and children. In addition to helping you rid yourself of some of the major illnesses of our time, if you follow the good doctor's advice, you'll just plain feel better.

I have no connection to the author, other than I think this is the best advice money can buy. It's bound to save you at least one doctor's office visit, or more. And maybe even some costly, totally unnecessary surgery.

5.0 out of 5 stars How to take control of your health, September 19, 2006

"The food you put into your body is the single most powerful factor that determines your health and well being." - Dr. John A. McDougall, MD

This challenging theme underlies all of Dr. McDougall's writings. Genetics and one's exercise habits are important, but for most people most of the time, the food you eat trumps everything else in determining your overall health. In this book Dr. Mcdougall focuses on how food affects the health of the body's digestive system.

This book takes you on a tour of your digestive system starting with your mouth, and progressing through your esophagus, stomach, liver, gallbladder and bowels. Dr. McDougal discusses the major conditions/diseases that afflict each of these organs. He explains through his own experience and scientific research how poor diet creates the problems most commonly suffered, and how a change in diet can relieve these problems. He also explains how problems in one particular area, the bowels, can trigger problems throughout the entire digestive system.

This book is for you if you suffer from any one or more of the following digestive conditions/diseases: bad breath, tooth decay, acid reflux - GERD, indigestion, ulcers, gallstones, liver chirrhosis, appendicitis, diverticulitis, IBS, constipation, hemorrhoids, vericose veins, hiatus hernia, colitis, colin polyps. Dr. McDougall explains that a healthy person shouldn't suffer from these conditions. But if you do, a change in diet will usually be sufficient to eliminate or greatly reduce the problem.

Dr. McDougall advocates a low-fat, plant based vegan diet as the simple solution to these commonly suffered digestive conditions and diseases. This simple solution sounds startling in our era of high-tech medical treatment, drugs and surgery. But it is supported by both his experience and scientific research. Why should you trust what McDougall says? Well, you don't have to. Just give his diet a fair test for a few weeks and see if you like the changes you see.

Dr. McDougall provides lists of foods appropriate for his diet as well as cooking techniques. All of the foods he recommends are available in a typical supermarket. So you don't need to change where you shop - just what you shop for.

In one short chapter Dr. McDougall tries to argue that humans are designed by anatomy and evolution to be vegetarian and not omnivores or carnivores. No one seriously argues that humans should be strict carnivores, so that is a straw man. And the last 10,000 years provides enough evidence that humans can thrive as omnivores. This superficial chapter is unnecessary and detracts from his main argument: choosing to follow his diet promotes optimum health. That is enough reason to follow the diet.

Achieving good health is a very empowering experience. It may, however, require changing attitudes and habits about food. But good health without resorting to drugs, pills, surgery, or constant medical surveillance is a goal worth striving for. This book can help you achieve that goal.

This is an excellent book for how the digestive system works and how we mess it up at times. The book supports a diet that is high in fiber, low in fat, and contains no animal proteins.

The only thing missing is the usual recipes to get you started. Still, you can always pick up the McDougall Quick and Easy Cookbook.

I've followed McDougall's program for 15 years...and many people ask how I'm able to stay so fit and healthy. I'm certain I've converted at least 20 others...but there are at least 20 others who started and can't seem to stay on the program. They think it's too hard.
To me, it's easy. Just eat the RIGHT things, and don't worry about how much you eat. If you have a big appetite, it's no problem! Tell people you are under doctor's orders at restaurants or parties.
I'd much rather trade in the fats, meats, and cheeses for ideal weight and good health. I'm over age 55 and I don't take any medications or diet pills -- and I eat as much as I want. My blood pressure, other tests are normal. I wear a size 8, which is smaller than I was at age 35.
I real all McDougall's books because they educate and inspire me. Go to his website, read the forum there. Great information.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Wonderful Book by John McDougall, August 26, 2006
This review is from: Dr. McDougall's Digestive Tune-Up (Paperback)
It's funny The China Study book attracted over 100 reviews that share the discovery of what Dr. McDougall started to write over 20 years ago about the health benefits of fat-free vegan eating.
I agree with the previous review that Dr. McDougall should be awarded the Nobel prize for his contribution to educating people of the right healthful diet.
I have most of his books and keep re-reading them all the time. Digestive Tune-up gave me a better insight into the entire process.
I have been following the McDougall program for 2 years now, before I was a vegetarian + using the traditional Chinese medicine recommendations but I was in the search of the complete system and I was lucky to find it in McDougall books.
Having experienced the best offers of low-fat vegan myself I started to speak about the advantages of the vegan food with co-workers and even strangers and it's hard to convince them, most of them just laugh at me and say they will die if they only eat whole grains and vegetables. It's also really hard to find vegan food for lunch. Thanks to the rightfoods.com from Dr. McDougall's new website I can have good cup food for lunch, delicious and convenient!
I love Dr.McDougall program and his books. I feel awaken and blessed after I began following this lifestyle. I enjoy vegan food and my body is so happy with it.

5.0 out of 5 stars a physician who "gets it", January 11, 2007

This review is from: Dr. McDougall's Digestive Tune-Up (Paperback)
I have followed Dr. McDougall's program for over 15 years and find myself at 61 very fortunate to have done so. While so many Americans my age battle obesity and chronic health conditions, I get to be slim, energetic and healthy. I bought this book only because I make it a point to buy and read everything this doctor writes. It, like all his other books, contains advice which is worth many, many times the cost of the book. Buy it, read it and recommend his work to all your friends and family members who may have health problems or who are just interested in being healthy.

This review is from: Dr. McDougall's Digestive Tune-Up (Paperback)
This book is a real eye-opener and gives new meaning to the saying "You are what you eat." Through his many years of research and seeing it first hand, Dr. McDougall makes it very clear and easy to understand that we need to change what we eat or we will be unhealthy, overweight and sick. He states that we need to be completely vegan and eliminate all animal products and fat from our diets to be truly healthy. I for one am all for being healthy and looking better in the process....

5.0 out of 5 stars Yet another learning experience for me, July 31, 2007
This review is from: Dr. McDougall's Digestive Tune-Up (Paperback)
I pride myself on medical and nutritional knowledge I've gained through much reading for the past 11 years, but halfway through this book, I've already learned some things I hadn't previously known.

I've read other books from this wonderful doctor, and I'm glad to be adding this one to the list.

Most books that advocate a vegan diet (low fat or otherwise) will never be read by the general public, but I have hope for this one because it really is such an easy read. It's lightly humorous while informative.

Though this book is really only geared towards the digestive system, I have to say I believe this is (at least) one of his best books yet.
