I've never had a bad Amazon shopping experience until now.
Unfortunatley, there are several things wrong with this product and it's prompted my first review - and it's a bad one.
I bought 4 of these units. In less than a minute I was very dissapointed. Here's what's wrong:
1. One Unit was DOA.
Tried switching batteries from a working unit just to make sure.
2. Misleading advertising.
The product was not as advertised. On the website is says 'Stainless Steel'. Nowhere does it mention that the base is sliver painted plastic. This was very misleading.
3. The Silver painted plastic base.
One of the units there was a large section where the silver paint had blistered. On antother there was a scratch out of the paint.
4. The Stainless Steel.
Even though top is what appears to be stainless steel (I'm not convinced), several of the units had scrathces and several had a gritty film of some sort. I like to see a picture of the factory this was made in. Appears to have been done in a cave or disued mine.
5. The solar panels.
The assembly is poor and alignment of solar panel in steel was shoddy. Ok, it's a cosmetic issue, but it's symptomatic of the overall poor quality and build.
6. The battery compartments.
I had to open this on the DOA unit to check it wasn't the battery.
It was impossible to open with your fingers. First one I tried to open with fingers bent and snapped immediately like a cheap Christmas toy from your aunt. I then carefully used a butter knife to open the rest. This would have been ok except was then impossible to reinsert the tab manually. I had to do the reverese process and wedge the butter knife in to shoe-horn the tab back in.
7. The Base and Top.
This twists off to gain access to on/off switch and battery compartment. The base attaches to top via 4 small plastic tabs inerting into grooves in the top. The first one I twisted gave sufficient resistence that when it finally gave I thought it had snapped in half. It didn't, but I know I had to be real careful. Although I got the knack on the others, it was very easy to misalign when reattaching, causing only 1 of the tabs to properly insert. Getting the misaligned unit apart again, in order to properly attach with all 4 tabs, gave a deja vu feeling of the imminient snapping off of a tab. It didn't, but I could tell that even the most careful twisting could quite easily snap a tab.
I think that's about it. Oh, I almost forgot. The 4 units were packed really well in a separate box, with bubble pack. I can't falut that. Outer boxed was pristine as delived by Fed/Ex. However I noticed the corner of one of the boxes on the inside was mashed in. The unit inside the box didn't show signs of damage from where corner was mashed. But how and when did that box get mashed? Was it before the product was in it? With obvious signs of damage to the box did anyone check if the unit inside had been damaged?
If this is unit is any indication of the other products, I would stear away from anything from this company.
I would have really liked to give a good review of this product.
It looks so great on the website.
