Editorial Review

First things first: these figures look great. The texture of their skin, teeth, and armor is rendered with loving detail, but it's the little extras that really set these guys apart. For Predator, that means a necklace of skulls and a panel on his arm that opens and closes. And for Alien, it means a translucent skull and a second set of teeth that springs out of his mouth. Alien is the more posable of the two, with a greater number of points of articulation in his arms and legs, and a rubber tail that helps him remain upright, although neither figure can stand very well outside of the included alien landscape stage that has footholds for them. The stage also has alien pods that glow with the flick of a switch, and a Face Hugger from Alien's world. --David Stoesz

5.0 out of 5 stars The best Alien and Predator toys ever created!, April 27, 2003

This review is from: McFarlane Toys Movie Maniacs Series 5 Deluxe Boxed Set Alien Vs. Predator (Toy)
Its been a long, long time since the days of Kenner's Alien and Predator toy lines. Both lines produced spin offs of those characters that were so stupid and extreme that they completely departed from the roots they came from. Now, we finally have the definitive collector's dream.

The Alien vs. Predator set comes with the Alien from the first Alien film, faithfully reproduced from the transparent cowl on its head right down to the very minute details of its body. It is fully posable, with multiple points of articulation and a 'bendy' tail that allows you to pose the tail in a variety of positions. It has a workable inner jaw the releases with the press of a small button, located either on the back of the head or under it (randomly packaged). It truly is the best recreation of the Alien in terms of an action figure that was ever created.

The Predator is also completely accurate to its original design. With gorgeous detail and color, there has never been a Predator figure that was so great to look at. The Predator features spring-action wrist blades, and the wrist terminal on the hand opens up as well. The shoulder cannon can be aimed, and he wears a trophy belt adorned with the skulls of his victims around his chest. The problem with the Predator is that it has virtually no articulation. The legs barely move, if at all. The only parts you can move on the Predator are the head and the arms, and the feet. Regardless, these were not made to be played with. They are collector's pieces. Though its poses are limited the Predator looks menacing in its confrontation with the Alien on the base.

The 'hive' base that comes with the set is also great. It comes with 3 eggs, one (or two, depending on the set) of which is open. All eggs can be 'opened', in that the top halves can come off and be replaced on any other bottom half on the base. As a little bonus, each egg contains a facehugger which can be bent into a variety of poses. Even the small facehugger is rich in detail. The base also includes lights in 2 of the eggs which are activated with a switch on the underside, giving them the glowing effect we see in the first Alien film.

This is overall a great set, but unfortunately, as with most McFarlane products, it broke within an hour of having it out of the box. The pegs that hold the figures in place are very weak. One slightly wrong twist and the peg will break. Since the Alien is dependant on those pegs to stand up (because it is so top heavy), this is a serious problem. I lost one peg by simply gently lifting the Alien off the base. I had to replace it with super-glue, which doesn't work very well on the plastic. The eggs are also a pain to keep together once you've popped the upper halves off.

Regardless of those few problems, this is the ultimate display piece. The Alien and Predator finally get the figures they deserve.

5.0 out of 5 stars AvsP set is simply amazing, February 6, 2003

This review is from: McFarlane Toys Movie Maniacs Series 5 Deluxe Boxed Set Alien Vs. Predator (Toy)
I have a bunch of the old Kenner Predator figures, being the huge Predator fan that I am, and was never overly impressed with their attention to detail (although some aren't all that bad). McFarlane blows them out of the water, hands down. This is the best-looking Predator figure I've yet to see, and the fact that it comes with an equally-as-detailed alien and cool base thing is a huge bonus (although you have to really take some time to get them to stand on it). Even the face-huggers are super-detailed! I was hugely impressed when I saw this thing, and it would make a great addition to your collection if you're a movie buff, Predator fan, Alien fan, action figure collector, or just looking for something that looks cool to take up space.

OK. Now the ratings.

Fun-5. How could this not get a 5? These are amazingly detailed and are just, well, fun.
Educational-1. Hmm. Can't figure out how Predators are educational.
Durability-3. The alien figure is just fine, no durability issues. But the Predator has a few, but only really because of McFarlane's apparent desire to make them so intricately detailed. 1-the wrist blades. They bend way too easy and are likely to break. 2-the shoulder cannon. Yes, it pivots, but that's because of a tiny little flimsy hinge. If they made it out of metal, it would be cool (same as the blades). If they made the gun sturdier and un-poseable, nobody would have probably cared anyway. 3-the cabling (i.e. the cables joining various parts of the Predator's armor, gun, etc), while a nice touch to the overall detail, is way to flimsy to last very long.

Overall, the best-looking Predator figure I've seen yet, and the alien isn't too bad either. Pick this up, the whole thing is just killer.
