5.0 out of 5 stars The best Alien and Predator toys ever created!
Its been a long, long time since the days of Kenner's Alien and Predator toy lines. Both lines produced spin offs of those characters that were so stupid and extreme that they completely departed from the roots they came from. Now, we finally have the definitive collector's dream.

3.0 out of 5 stars Detailed but VERY flimsy!
This "deluxe box" is not like the JAWS one previously released by McFarlane. The JAWS one was firm. This one has great detail, but the figures DO NOT stay on the pegs well at all. Once out of the box place it on a shelf and forget about it. If you sneeze hard next to it they will fall over. Could have and should have made the figures stick to the base.

This review is from: McFarlane Toys Movie Maniacs Series 5 Deluxe Boxed Set Alien Vs. Predator (Toy)
Its been a long, long time since the days of Kenner's Alien and Predator toy lines. Both lines produced spin offs of those characters that were so stupid and extreme that they completely departed from the roots they came from. Now, we finally have the definitive collector's dream.

The Alien vs. Predator set comes with the Alien from the first Alien film, faithfully reproduced from the transparent cowl on its head right down to the very minute details of its body. It is fully posable, with multiple points of articulation and a 'bendy' tail that allows you to pose the tail in a variety of positions. It has a workable inner jaw the releases with the press of a small button, located either on the back of the head or under it (randomly packaged). It truly is the best recreation of the Alien in terms of an action figure that was ever created.

The Predator is also completely accurate to its original design. With gorgeous detail and color, there has never been a Predator figure that was so great to look at. The Predator features spring-action wrist blades, and the wrist terminal on the hand opens up as well. The shoulder cannon can be aimed, and he wears a trophy belt adorned with the skulls of his victims around his chest. The problem with the Predator is that it has virtually no articulation. The legs barely move, if at all. The only parts you can move on the Predator are the head and the arms, and the feet. Regardless, these were not made to be played with. They are collector's pieces. Though its poses are limited the Predator looks menacing in its confrontation with the Alien on the base.

The 'hive' base that comes with the set is also great. It comes with 3 eggs, one (or two, depending on the set) of which is open. All eggs can be 'opened', in that the top halves can come off and be replaced on any other bottom half on the base. As a little bonus, each egg contains a facehugger which can be bent into a variety of poses. Even the small facehugger is rich in detail. The base also includes lights in 2 of the eggs which are activated with a switch on the underside, giving them the glowing effect we see in the first Alien film.

This is overall a great set, but unfortunately, as with most McFarlane products, it broke within an hour of having it out of the box. The pegs that hold the figures in place are very weak. One slightly wrong twist and the peg will break. Since the Alien is dependant on those pegs to stand up (because it is so top heavy), this is a serious problem. I lost one peg by simply gently lifting the Alien off the base. I had to replace it with super-glue, which doesn't work very well on the plastic. The eggs are also a pain to keep together once you've popped the upper halves off.

Regardless of those few problems, this is the ultimate display piece. The Alien and Predator finally get the figures they deserve.

5.0 out of 5 stars AvsP set is simply amazing, February 6, 2003

I have a bunch of the old Kenner Predator figures, being the huge Predator fan that I am, and was never overly impressed with their attention to detail (although some aren't all that bad). McFarlane blows them out of the water, hands down. This is the best-looking Predator figure I've yet to see, and the fact that it comes with an equally-as-detailed alien and cool base thing is a huge bonus (although you have to really take some time to get them to stand on it). Even the face-huggers are super-detailed! I was hugely impressed when I saw this thing, and it would make a great addition to your collection if you're a movie buff, Predator fan, Alien fan, action figure collector, or just looking for something that looks cool to take up space.

OK. Now the ratings.

Fun-5. How could this not get a 5? These are amazingly detailed and are just, well, fun.
Educational-1. Hmm. Can't figure out how Predators are educational.
Durability-3. The alien figure is just fine, no durability issues. But the Predator has a few, but only really because of McFarlane's apparent desire to make them so intricately detailed. 1-the wrist blades. They bend way too easy and are likely to break. 2-the shoulder cannon. Yes, it pivots, but that's because of a tiny little flimsy hinge. If they made it out of metal, it would be cool (same as the blades). If they made the gun sturdier and un-poseable, nobody would have probably cared anyway. 3-the cabling (i.e. the cables joining various parts of the Predator's armor, gun, etc), while a nice touch to the overall detail, is way to flimsy to last very long.

Overall, the best-looking Predator figure I've seen yet, and the alien isn't too bad either. Pick this up, the whole thing is just killer.

How does one truly address such a wondrous portrayal of a timeless beauty that can sustain itself within a void of both airlessness and vacuum, surviving any atmospheric anomaly it finds itself confronted with while preying on the helpless and the armed alike with a fury that is, in a word, magnificent? Can words really convey how grandiose the craftsmanship involved is when it captures the stellar movements of the perfect killing machine as it stalks a being bred for the hunt, its linear design meshing with the rudimentary display setting to accent its movements in a way that screams, "Foreboding!" Perhaps they can't and perhaps they won't, but one must try anyhow, hoping to express their utter contentment with the vessel of happiness itself and with the struggle the fixture immortalizes.

One needs only to look toward the photograph provided to see that this is quite the delectable masterpiece, coupling an Alien and a Predator with two "pods" that come complete with their own little bundles of joy. Yes, with a minimal amount of effort you can take these and loft them toward the artificial sun confined in your home/office/toystore, letting light glisten through that outer obstruction so you can actually view those delicately crafted facehuggers lying in wait; their tiny digits outstretched like needy children within birthing chambers ready to share with the world something veraciously momentous. Before you know it, however, your gaze is forced away, shifting to the hostile showpiece itself as it stands like a foreboding superstar; its body stained by the press of mud befouling its glistening black exoskeleton and its mouth wide with anticipation as it hurdles across the landscape to protect the queen's progeny. Further beautifying it is the fact that the inner mouth moves in and out, to and fro, somberly awaiting the taste of the prey that dauntingly mocks it from across the ruinously inky rock separating the two. Lastly you bear witness to the Predator standing there, looking the situation over with calculating eyes that measure the size of its trophy; its hunting instinct increasing behind a mask sheltering that anticipatory gaze. On top of that is the gun that swivel about on its shoulder, looking for its prey to close in as this dangerous cat-and-mouse is played to the death.

To say that McFarlane toys have outdone themselves this time is an understatement of immense proportions because, to me at least, this work of art is something I've been craving for a while. There have been many pretenders come and go, doting the horizon with many bad additions to that paid homage only to the fact that fans consume, but this is actually a different breed altogether. It, my fellow Xenophite brother and sisters, is worth obtaining.

Fans of these two characters simply MUST get it! I've been waiting for these monsters for a long time. Finally a company that produces detailed and quality toys has the liscense to make them. I don't have anything negative to say about mine, except that they could have spent a litle more time accurately painting the Alien figure.

Although this piece is amazingly detailed, it is not as detailed as it was represented on the advertisment. The base looks nice but is very flimsy. The figures themselves do not stand on their pegs and they are not as articulated as I'd like to have seen. Also, to touch on what I read in another review, I think this item would have been better had it come with the Predator's mask.
