5.0 out of 5 stars Scarier than half the horror films you ever saw.
Better than the first Spawn video, yet you still need to see it (the first one) to get some background story. Incredibly stylish, surprisingly scary. Makes you wonder what'd it be of Spawn now if they had showed this cartoon in movie theaters instead of the crappy live action film. Why not? It's about time America stops pigeon-holing animation as kid stuff.

3.0 out of 5 stars An Improved Second Season
The second season of the HBO animated Spawn series turned out to be a major improvement on the first. The gratuitous sex and violence was brought down a notch from the unnecessarily graphic mood of the first, but still kept at an exciting and shocking level. Also, Cogliostro manages to shut up long enough for us to realize that we don't need him to tell us everything...

5.0 out of 5 stars Darker, more tense that the first, March 31, 1999

Dave Donarski (Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Spawn 2 (DVD)
The original Spawn series on HBO was a wonderfully executed project, and the second season is just as good. The story is well developed, with plenty of action. Spawn seems much more indestructible in this set than in the first, as he is becoming familiar with the powers bestowed upon him. In fact, there is only one 'counter' display during the entire movie to remind us that Spawn's power is not infinite. The installment answers few questions, and raises even more. There is also more of a Japanimation style to some of the scenes this time around.

While the movie itself is superb, the menu system could have used a little tweaking. The background music that accompanies the main menu isn't in sync at the loop point. Also, on some screens, all the available choices are displayed in text, while on others there are small 'arrow' buttons. Nitpicky details, but details nonetheless.

Spawn proves to be as complex as ever, never fully becoming hero nor villain, still unable to cope with his new existence.

Highly recommended to fans of the series. For the uninitiated, you will get more out of Spawn 2 if you've seen the first installment beforehand. Five stars for the film, four stars for the DVD presentation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Animation so good it'll make you think twice, July 30, 2002
This review is from: Spawn 2 (DVD)
I remember watching this series when it aired on HBO. I was in shock at how dark and perfectly executed the mood of the "cartoon" was. This wasn't re-using frame after frame like Hanna-Barbara, it wasn't happy kiddie-fare from Disney, and it wasn't some strange art style inspired from Europe like Heavy Metal. Spawn was truly an animated series for adults, and people who could think. Don't let the spelling of other reviewers (words like "phat" and the excessive use of the letter z, e.g.) fool you into thinking this for the current MTV generation only. This is for anyone who wants to see an intelligent, dark series that probably gets away with more grim acts than many R-rated movies. Exceptional and eye-opening. You owe it to yourself to see this work of art.

3.0 out of 5 stars An Improved Second Season, May 3, 2006
This review is from: Spawn 2 (DVD)
The second season of the HBO animated Spawn series turned out to be a major improvement on the first. The gratuitous sex and violence was brought down a notch from the unnecessarily graphic mood of the first, but still kept at an exciting and shocking level. Also, Cogliostro manages to shut up long enough for us to realize that we don't need him to tell us everything about Spawn; we can discover what we need to know through Keith David's brilliant and emotional voicework (that stands out in a mostly mediocre voice cast) and the flashbacks that are both visually striking and incredibly well-edited into the onscreen action. Now that the show has set its tone and given all the background we need, it is able to focus on suspense, and the 2nd season has plenty of it. Did Terry betray Al to get to Wanda? Will Terry's investigating at the workplace finally force Wynn to kill him? And, most importantly, will Spawn ever get around to telling Wanda who the monster she sees really is, and will he fight for good, or turn his back to humanity? The 2nd season still isn't perfect. Spawn moping around can tend to get repetitive, and there seems to be a lot of building up between him and Wanda and in regard to the ultimate battle between good and evil that leads to few payoffs. However, whereas I barely made it to the end of the 1st season, I watched this one all the way through. I have not seen the third season, but if the show's creators continue to improve at the rate they did between the first two, it should be incredible.

5.0 out of 5 stars Way cool second season., November 27, 2002

This review is from: Spawn 2 (DVD)
The movie was one of the worst I had seen in my life. I did not have high hope for the animated series but I was very much surprised. The dialogue and, bizzarly enough, the acting are a hundred times as good as the film and the plot and characters are also much more intriguing.

This is the second season of Spawn and it is crammed full of plot developments and great characters. Sam and Twitch get more room here. But since this has stopped airing as of 1999 there has been no fourth season. It's a shame since the one thing I can be sure ofis that the story could have had one hell of a send-off when it finally climaxes.

It's more than likely in syndication somewhere so I'd start watching this if I were you. But be prepared. The violence is quite graphic and the overall tone of the stories ranges from kiddie fiddlers to satanic demons. Needless to say, it's not a cartoon for kids. It's an animated series for adults.

The DVD is in full screen format, as originally drawn and is in Dolby 5.1 surround. Todd McFarlane says in his commentary that he was working on a darker sequel for the movie. It has since not happened. But I'd keep my fingers crossed, because the toys sell like crazy and the audience is definitely there.

4.0 out of 5 stars Improves on the first., April 22, 2000
This review is from: Todd McFarlane's Spawn 2 (Unrated Collector's Edition) (Animated Series) [VHS] (VHS Tape)
If you liked the first one, see this one. If you haven't seen the first one, I'd reccomend you watch it before this. Darker than the first. More action, but a little creepier. One thing about this series is that it messes with your head in confusing you about whats right and wrong. This tape has a lot of that in it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Spawn 2, December 28, 2011

This review is from: Spawn 2 (DVD)
I didn't enjoy watching this series had; I did in the past, on the 1st film. The storyline seems to be jumping around trying to tell a story from the first chapter. I found it boring and confusing to say the least; short-live on the action sections which tried it's best in explaining to the viewer with flashback viewing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great adaption of the comic book., February 14, 2011

In this second installment, Spawn (Al Simmons) discovers who killed him and "destroyed" whatever future he may have had with his wife. It is literally hell on earth. If you like carnage and wanton destruction, this is the one. Remember, this is not a children's cartoon. There are many ADULT situations so put the kids to bed and enjoy.

3.0 out of 5 stars very good cartoon, June 17, 2006
This review is from: Spawn 2 (DVD)
I was a little dissapointed in part 2 cause they began and finished part 1 so well with you really wanting them to continue the story. But then this whole movie they just kind of stand around and put in some cool opponents for spawn, but it isn't nearly as memorable as the first. They continue tellign the story, just not near as much as I wanted them to. The dark mood follows the first movie and you have very cool weird evil stuff happening. Voice acting continues to be superb and now I am just looking for part 3, and there had better be a part 4 and 5 and 6 and 7...
