McGraw-Hill Medical Coding: An Introduction presents the foundation students need to become proficient outpatient and inpatient coders. Balancing diagnostic (ICD-9-CM) and procedural (CPT/HCPCS) coding, the initial text in this 3-book series teaches the principles of correct coding by focusing on the HIPAA-required codes and guidelines. The most relevant diseases and procedures—those that make up the bulk of coders’ work on the job—provide the base for coding applications and exercises, so that student become familiar with common coding scenarios. Text features such as pathophysiology refreshers, reimbursement reviews, and Internet activities also build knowledge of the context of coding.

1.0 out of 5 stars I "HATE" this book!, August 25, 2011
This review is from: McGraw-Hill Medical Coding: An Introduction (Paperback)
In reading this book, I find myself confused and my gut wrenches every time I open it. In answering the questions at the end of each chapter, I find myself continually asking, "How am I supposed to know this or how to do this?"

The book reads poorly. Too many tips and other information thrown in, it's like listening to several people talking at once and I'm easily distracted and disgusted. I find them pushing the learning of shortcut letters for terms annoying. I'm trying to learn the terms but all these 2-3 letter titles are just confusing. I find I have to go back several pages to find out what they are talking about to continue reading. For an introduction, I feel that maybe the shortcut letter could always be used repeatedly so that the information is able to be absorbed. You wouldn't want to start a new job and have someone tell you the abbreviated letters once and expect you to remember them, would you? No, you would need time and repetition to learn, something this book falls short of.

Then they throw in filler material that really should be a separate book or course in itself. At least make it a separate chapter. Again, in relationship to a conversation, it's similar to listening to a person talking, side-tracking with a "by-the-way" comment, then returning to the subject at hand. It's not a focus oriented manner of instruction. And they call this book an introduction....

Detail of information - good but poorly presented
Readability - annoying and distracting
Comprehension - (for me) little

Luckily for me, the school accidentally mailed me the wrong course book first, which I find easy to understand and has helped me tremendously in understanding the basics. If I didn't have that book to explain things, I think I would have dropped out. I have used the wrong book to be able to answer the questioned asked in this book. That's just plain pathetic!

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed...., May 1, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: McGraw-Hill Medical Coding: An Introduction (Paperback)
I was so excited to receive this book so that I can begin to study and prepare for the CPT exam. I ordered the book and the next day I received an email saying that it was ready to ship. However, a couple hours later, I received another email notifying me that my book didn't actually ship, that instead I was being refunded my money and they were not going to ship out the book after all because according to them, "Amazon was ripping them off." Why did they decide this when I haved already placed an order and paid for it? I am not amused right now by this seller and even if they decide to come back to Amazon, I WILL NEVER ORDER BOOKS WITH DITTIEBOOKS AGAIN. Well at least they refunded my money. I am very disappointed!!!!
